ATF fluid/filter change...
When I drain the AT and the torque convertor, does filling the ATF through the dipstick also fill the up TC? Or, do I just drain the AT and not mess with the TC?
Thanks.

I drain the tc and the atf pan. Filling through the dipstick tube fills them both up. I changed my atf last weekend, I think I used slightly less than 7 quarts.

The engine has to be running to fill the torque converter though. Put in 3 quarts, then start it and put in the rest or the case will fill up and the ATF will run out the vent.

Dan,
the books that I use says to put in 4 qts and crank it then follow up with whatever it takes to get it to the proper level.

Drain plug/bolt type/size
Are the drain plugs for AT, TC, rear diff and Oil all torx or hex? I was just out at the car thinking I could do an oil change since I'm snowed in and noticed the bolt doesn't look like a "normal" bolt.
Also, are the AT and TC female or male? What about the rear diff? Thanks.

They are allen head bolts. Don't have the sizes right here in front of me. Make sure you remove the "fill" plug on the differential prior to removing the drain plug.

Transmission Drain plugs - 5mm Hex
Differential Drain plugs - 14mm Hex I can remember these because I'm cheap and only bought the ones I need, not a whole set. And for good measure, starter mounting bolts - 10mm Hex Ken300D |

What transmission fluid does a 123 use?

The Haynes W123 manual says a Dexron II ATF, but I asked if a Dexron III would be o.k. since SAM's sells it by the case and the replys in the forum said that would be fine.
I would also like to know if there is a brand/type of ATF that would help prolong the life of the AT. Thanks.

Actually the current recommendation on that transmission IS DexronIII/Mercon.
On brand names, I can attest that Penzoil ATF (DexronIII/Mercon) works just swell and gives good service, plus meets all the criteria that MB requires, if you read the fine-print on the recommendation sheet. Gilly

If you want to try synthetic ATF, AutoZone has the Mobil 1 ATF for $4.99 a quart, at least in the East Allentown, PA store. 7 quarts would be $35, rather than the $7 or so that the Sam's fluid would cost. I've noticed smoother shifting since switching, especially when the drivetrain is cold.
