What exactly were the circumstances under which the knock developed? It's possible the circlip was in there for a long time and had nothing to do with the knock. Was it low on oil? Did the engine stop running? How fast was the engine turning when the knock developed? What was the oil pressure when the knock started? Are there any vacuum problems? Have you used a stethoscope to try to isolate the location of the knock?

The Glen Curtis museum in Hammondsport is very cool.

Well I was heading over to a friends house to give him a hand. I drove about 25 miles and topped off the tank and checked the oil and tires. I got maybe another 20 miles and heard a noise. I thought it was the rack I had on top of the car. I was in a open area and thought it was the wind just hitting me at a new direction. Well I decided to put the car in neutral and the car shut off. The noise did go away. So I coasted to a pull off and tried to figure out what was going on. Anyhow I decided to go a little further into town and see if the noise returns. At this point the noise was gone and I was still thinking it was the rack on the car catching the wind. I thought the car shuting off was a fluke was thinking it had to to do with operator error. Anyhow the noise came back so I pulled over and called a tow truck.

I checked all the injectors to see if it was related to fuel. I adjusted the lifters to see if that was it. Then I decide to drop the pan.

Update: I decided to strain the oil a little better and found small flakes that looks like aluminum foil. I'm assumming bearing. I haven't done anymore because it's kind of depressing. I guess I'll start tearing in to it to see the extent of the damage. It's is sounding like it's cheaper to just find another motor. I still want to know where the clip came from. I think for now I'll locate another motor and find out where the clip came from when I have a donor.

Anybody have one?
