The specs for the Rotella synthetic are nowhere as good as the Delvac 1.

Here is the site for Delvac 1:

http://www.mobil.com/mobil_lubes/onhighway/products_services/delvac1/specs_content.html

Here is info for Rotella:
https://thegenesisnetwork.equilon.com/genesis/prodinfopdf/out/ROTELLA%20T%20Synthetic.pdf

I myself notice a lot longer warmup time when the temp is at -10 deg C vs 0 deg.

It's not like short hops will cause your engine to self destruct. You will need to do oil changes based on time rather than mileage. Such short hops build up acids and moisture in the crankcase. Driving 1 mile hops in cold weather would warrant oil changes about every two months.

Ensure that the oil is circulating well before putting the transmission in gear. If the engine is in good shape this should take no more than 30 seconds or so at a fast idle.

Good luck,

I wish I had this problem

My commute is 40 miles one way (1 hr 15 min), in lovely NJ traffic surrounded consistantly by a bunch of idiots.

Whine...

When I had my 55 mile commute (each way), I actually loved it. I enjoyed the drive more than the work!

I really don't think this is a big problem. On any given day when I do errands, I start and stop my car what seems like hundreds of times. It always starts right up and I have never noticed any evidence that the charge is weakening. I sometimes leave it running if it is not warmed up yet or if it is in a safe place and I'm only to be a few minutes but remember, if the car is warmed up, you do not have to waste power preheating the glowplugs. There is more than enough heat retained in the head to cause ignition. I do of course change the oil frequently and generally over-maintain...so why worry? If it breaksa...I fixa...

Amen to that. I have a 50 mile one way commute myself. Once I get the 240D up to par, it will be THE event to look forward to 5 days a week!!!

Cool

I'm with you there, My morning commute is not very far but sometimes at night if I'm bored, I'll take a cruise down to the beach. Sometimes I'm enjoying my drive so much, I just hate to go home!
