If you look on the internet for a chart you will find that the Batter Voltage drops when the Battery is cold.

Of you have a Battery that has removable Caps check the Electrolyte level.
One time I also found on a Realatives Car that the Battery had a layer of scum covering the whole top of the batter and it was conducting Electricity between the Battery poles.

I never thought of that angle. I will look for a chart. It wasn't frigid yesterday when I took the readings about 20 F, but the day prior when I got the even lower voltage, it was much colder, 6 F.

After seeing my buddy the mechanic tell customers they paid for a tow-in because of dirty battery connections or dry cells, I am now well trained. I clean the top of the battery, the posts and connectors spring and fall. And I check the electrolyte when I do the posts.

Some surface leakage of currrent is probably more common than thought in harsher climates. A good wash down with baking soda occassionally should not hurt.

Okay in the interests of honesty to those who replied, and even more importantly to those future searchers who may look at this thread....

If you are having intermittent or inconsistent glow problems, do yourself a huge favour and check that the 8mm nuts that hold the glow harness connectors on the plug ends are tight.

FIRST.

Number 1, 3 and 5 of mine were loose. The thing I don't get is that I put in 2, 3 and 4, and my wrenching neighbour (who has suitably small hands, I have mitts) put in 1 and 5.

So we both managed to not tighten down the nuts properly, that day. Amazing.

Someone pass me that pointey white cap and stool, willya?
