Is a spare manual tranny for $130 (with 350K miles) worth it?

Hi guys,

Someone I know is parting out a 240D, and he has offered to sell me the manual transmission out of it for $130. It has 350K miles on it!

He is selling it for someone else, and the condition is unknown.

It's a little tempting, but I'm not sure I should bite.

My 240D only has 138K miles, and the transmission is doing just fine.

Is it worth it? Just to have a spare sitting around?

Packman

It is probably worth it, but why do you want to buy it if yours is in good shape? Change oil in yours every 100,000 miles or so, along with proper use of the clutch and your trans will far outlast the car.

Treated reasonably they will go the life of the car usually. They are only lightly stressed behind the 616 engine.

They were also used behind much stronger engines as well at one time. Now that said if you get all the parts and pieces off the car so someone can do an automatic to standard conversion on their 616 cheap enough might be worthwhile.

You don't necicarily need it now but maybe someone else would want it.

I am convinced there is a subsection of Murphy's Law that states "The chances of your next urgent repair scenario requiring the parts you have so carefully stockpiled is... not quite zero, but getting there."

I have storage boxes full of parts, used and new ones I got on deals I couldn't pass over.

In the last two years, I have had to use: a set of glowplugs .

Honestly, as others have pointed out, an entire spare manual trans would be low priority, unless yours is giving hints of the beginning of a problem.

Now a known-good spare automatic... that would be a different story.

HMMMM.........I do have several.

I do grab the front sections off 240D`s and the automatic X mounts for doing a 300D 4-spd conversion. also have a few 4-spds and some 5-spds from 190E`s. I have some projects I eventually want to do and it is always good to have spares for that Just incase whatever, that pop`s it`s ugly head up now and then.

The out put flange on our 240`s 4-spd was loose and wobbly, thought it was just the nut that was loose, upon closer inspection, the splines on the flange were worn to a point from working for so long. so one of the spare Iron box 4-spds donated it`s Flange and nut. splines on the trans were good.

They are not exactly making new parts, and as these old cars are getting crushed at an alarming rate, there goes some of the inventory available.

$130.00 isnt too bad, PNP charges around $150 out the door, and you pull it.

If it's still hooked up to the motor in the car, you can do a light preliminary test on it by putting the stick in neutral with the clutch out, revving the motor, stabbing the clutch back in, and throwing it into gear. Repeat this for each gear. A good tranny should not hesitate very much at getting thrown into gear like this. This is a test I have devised to possibly test vehichles that are running but not roadable -- if anyone else sees an issue with this idea, please let me know.

I'd offer him $75 but only if I had yet more free space for car parts...

The bigger question is can you get the flywheel and drive shaft?
