Warning lights on '85 300TD
Greetings. Most all of the time I have owned this car (@10 yrs, has 155k), the brake and battery warning lights would often stay lit right after starting, but then would go out once (and stay off) the RPMs increased. Now they are staying on all the time while the car is running. I thought it used to be fault of the worn ignition switch, but not sure that is the issue here. I have not sprayed the ign switch with WD-40 or graphite yet.
I do not believe that the brake pads are worn too far and the brake fluid is between MAX and MIN levels. I do not believe that the alternator is bad, but guess I could have that checked out. Seems pretty odd that both of these problems would surface at the same time, in light of these indicator lights that had been lighting and going off as a tandem for quite some time. Anybody have any thoughts? Appreciate the help here as always! |

My first suggestion would be worn brushes in the alternator.

verify the fan belt/s are connected to the alternator first!
if not, I'd pull the alternator and have it tested. WORN BRUSHES WILL NOT ACTIVATE THE ALT LIGHT...

That's right, this thing has separate belts. Agree, check the alternator belt for correct tightness first.

fixed! was apparently just low on brake fluid.
Not sure exactly why the battery warning would also light in conjunction with the brake warning light, but unfortunately some inexperienced mechanics had messed with the instrument cluster before (trying to repair a gauge) and probably screwed it up. No one around my area (sw MO) knows anything about this car and shops end up breaking more than they fix. :-\
Appreciate the responses! |

Did both go on and off simultaneously? The reason I ask I had a similar issue on my 85 300D but not at the same time. On the battery light issue on wet days after startup and driving the battery light would illuminate after hitting a puddle and then going off after increasing RPM's (obviously loose alternator belt tension) On the brake light after going over railroad tracks or any road issue that almost has a bottoming out affect I get a brake light that is related to fluid level it too would go out after reving a little or pressing the tab on top of the master cylinder if reving did not solve the issue (my fluid is at proper level). This again is on a 300D not TD so do not know if wagons are any different in regards to brake lights and sensors.
