call me crazy, but I'm looking at another SD...

it's only 550 for the car.
the paint is in good shape, looks like a nice repaint in the recent past, no clear coat fade.
it's silver, the driver's window has been open for the last 2 years, and the owner used the car to store... garbage in. literally, garbage. food trash, bagged trash etc... it's nasty.
the turn signals are all gone, the tail light assemblies are open, and all the bulbs are gone.
the motor starts up quickly with a gasser battery and no glow plugs. little to no blowby smoke from the cap, and the motor is smooth at idle, cold.
trans shifts firm forward and reverse, I did not move the car, as all 4 tires are dry rotted, and flat, but the wheels and lugs are flawless.
little dings in several spots on the car.
oh, and due to the driver's window being open, the floor pan has rust bulging out that side seam... looks like an easy fix but rust is rust.

oh, and the interior is in very good shape under the garbage...

oh yeah, it's BLACK LEATHER!!!

Sounds like one worth getting to get some parts off of it and then scrap. For 550 you could come out about even after scrapping the body! And have a bunch of parts and engine/trans....

Engine must have excellent compression. Steal it at $500 OR LESS!

At the very least, pull the motor/ trans, slap it on a pallet. Someone will need it one day

Put the motor in your SD with the blown engine due to vacuum pump death...

Well you could use the "are you mad? 550 for a dustbin?" approach...

There is money to be made recycling garbage, maybe a few bucks ($) return on that.

The price is right. I'd jump on it.

Go for it

I like the black leather, and if you can get it with a relatively solid body & good drivetrain, it sounds nice. If it were closer to me, I would want to go look at it.

Why on earth is there trash in? What on earth prompted him to store trash in it? Is there a hidden issue?

When my 300d was on it's last legs, I loaned it to a friend. (Transmission was almost dead, half the windows were literally glued up, pretty much everything was gone and it was rusting quite nicely.)

Anyway, when it became unsafe to drive I told him park it and I'll get it when I'm home next, I'll be parting it out/scrapping the rustbucket leftovers.

He took that as, oh ill throw garbage in there instead of paying the trash man it doesn't matter the car is getting scrapped anyway.

I'd offer him 500 and tell him he needs to take the garbage out of it. I'd absolutely buy this.

I'd take care of the trash myself, figuring that if he takes the trash out, he may be motivated to clean up the interior and ask more for the car.

I've always thought the MBz diesel would make an awesome boat motor. Here's one that is running well!
