Cool Fan upgrade on 1983 300cd

Here in Dallas, TX last summer was quite hot. Well over 100 on some days and my car did not like it. I had the "updated plastic fan" with a strong clutch and my temp would sometimes creep a little over the 100c mark. I found that a fan and clutch from a 1991 560sel will work! I also got a smaller water pump pulley off a 1985 300sd to spin the water pump and fan faster. The fan sticks a little further out than the stock one but i see no problems. With this clutch, there is more room to squeeze your fingers in there to get the bolts started in the water pump and you can fit the boxed end of your wrench on them! The fan is a little bigger around too. it completely fills the stock shroud so all the air is pulled through the radiator. With the smaller pulley it really moves a ton of air. revving the engine to 2000rpm will spin my aux fan. My aux fan is off of a later w126 as well... The only downside is that it really roars! 2500rpm and up it sounds like a bus im guessing this hogs a bit more engine power than the plastic fan but it will kick any electric or plastic upgrade fan's a$$ in airflow! the clutch is working properly by the way. painting the fan in ricer performance red will give you at least 25 more hp please feel free to ask any questions! Summer is around the corner and a good cooling system is very important.

Take that radiator out of the way along with the front grill and you could fly with that thing!

X2. If it's running hot it's not because of the stock fan is not up to the job. Neither of my w123's run over 85 in Palm Beach county no matter what time of year it is. My radiator system is clean and the fluid is new...

yes yes, it has had 2 Mercedes-Benz branded citric acid flushes in the past year, has new thermostat, AMSOIL coolant, new waterpump......i mean she runs not "hot", just a little warmer than i'd prefer, maybe around 100-105.....only when its really hot out.....of course it could be partly because my coolant has better heat transfering properties than plain old cheapo coolant, thus evacutaing more heat from the block.... and since it doesnt boil under pressure until over 260 degrees with this coolant ratio, i guess it really doesnt matter how hot it gets, as long as its not close to overheating......either way, still like the idea of upgrading both the aux fan and the main fan.....i also like the idea of the smaller waterpump pulley to increase pump speed....

by the way, the pump vanes on my new waterpump are much different than the stock ones, and are supposed to also increase waterflow....

Maybe your clutch is weak. Does it have much resistance when you car is up to temperature?

Very silly thing that I see happening often: with a pressure-washer, clean all the dirt lodged in the radiator. It's a little tricky to get out, but it should make a SUBSTANTIAL difference in cooling.

no fanclutch, this fan (also has a brand new blade) is mounted directly to the pully, always engaged......depending on clearances and such, i am thinking of mounting the upgrade fanblade the same way, if possible, connected directly onto the pulley.....

as far as the pressure washer goes, isnt that risky with an old radiator, so much pressure ??

The way you described it pulling air, it should suck the bugs out of the radiator.

I have seen debris piled up between the AC Condensor and the Radiator. that will restrict air flow.

It should suck the bugs out of the radiator of the car in front!

I bet it sounds like one of these

i also have a customer who has a 110k mile '78 240 D, with one flush, new thermostat, regular coolant, which runs the same temp (on the guage) constantly (at or slightly above the 100grad mark), and never gets cooler than that, which mine does when it isnt brutal heat.....his car's new thermostat, NAPA, is the same one as mine.....mine had no thermostat before, so i have no frame of reference, just that when i installed the thermostat it heated to the (displayed) temp that its always at (or rises slightly above) now....

Thumbs up

HA, was just telling jamesdean I tossed on my M117 fan on the SD for a quick test. My thought process is that the fan could help A/C performance at idle due to superior air flow.

We will see what happens.
