Checking/setting timing OM603?

So,

Iv'e just bought this engine, and only test started it quickly without any coolingwater in it to see how it runs, it didnt run on all cylinders at first but after 5-6 seconds it revved pretty good on all cylinders. Had no headers on so the noise was too loud to really hear it run smooth.

Iv'e searched this forum and had a hard time finding what i was looking for.
Im switching my stock IP to an Mynäpump with 7mm plungers etc

Iv'e lined up the camshaft timing marks, the pointer on the crankshaft pulley is then set on 30 ATDC, this after 3 full revolutions via the crankshaft bolt.
I also checked the IP timing slot, and when locked with the special tool the pointer was now at 45(!!!) ATDC.
So i pulled the IP out and now my question is how do i reset the timing on the crankshaft pulley to 0?
The engine started directly, with the timing marks as is. Cam at 0, crankpulley pointer at 30, IP timing slot locked and the pulley on 45~.
I know that when installing a IP im supposed to set the pump to 15 ATDC, wich it is at now? 45-30...

When i bought the engine, the crankshaft pulley bolt was loose so i tightened it before i did anything of the above! Im not sure how it works, might i have turned the pulley or is it somehow locked to the crank?

The crank pulley should be indexed to the crank with a woodruff key. If the crank and cam are that much out of phase, the engine won't run and you'll have bent valves.

Ignoring the cam for now, it's odd that the IP lock slips into place properly with the crank at 45* ATDC. Are you sure the locking tool is engaging the the RIV tang?

If the tang is far out of position, the lock indicator will drop but the IP can still be rotated. Hopefully you haven't turned the engine or IP since removing the IP. Reinstall the IP and double check the RIV tang.

There is a special tool that allows turning the crank when the IP is removed. Since I don't imagine you have the special tool, reattach the IP and chain tensioner so you can safely rotate the crank.

Set the cam to TDC -

I find it easier to look through the cam sprocket to align the slot in the cam flange with the notch in the cam tower. Read the crank to determine chain stretch, elongation or whatever your vocabulary calls chain wear. Hopefully it's within a couple of degrees of TDC at the crank. Then turn the crank to 14-15*ATDC, remove the IP, turn the IP until you see the tang centered in the RIV port, install the tool, then install the IP. You can turn the IP by wrapping a rag on the input shaft and gripping with slip joint pliers or vice grips.

Turn the engine and IP only in the direction of normal rotation!

Take this as theory rather than step-by-step instructions if the engine runs properly with IP timing as far off as 30- or 45* ATDC. A significant part of the story might remain untold.

When you use the Timing Locking Pin the IP has to be rotated in the direction of normal roation when it locks.
If you lock it rotaiting it backwards it may not lock correctly.

I have read that if you remove certain parts up front the Pointer also needs to be removed. Is it possible that the Pointer is not lined up properly?
I am not sure what the proceedure is on Your Engine line the Pointer back up correctly.
On the 617s you remove the Prechamber and use a Dial Indicator with an extension going down to the top of the Piston and bring it up to TDC and check or reset the Pointer.
Stretch (formaly know as Army) had another method on 617s where you let one of the Valves drop on top of the Piston and use a Dial Indocator on that Valve to determing TDC.

Hi all,

Just finished a swap from an OM603.97 ( rod bender) back to a OM603.96. Only replaced the block. Head, IP, is from the original .97. Hving timing issues. Can I use the pump from the original car or I need to find an old Injection pump as well ? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all !
