84 300d - not starting, whirring noise with batt connected

drove the car yesterday, no issues. Started it up today and noticed a whirring/buzzing noise... I thought it was a neighbor mowing the lawn. Realized it was my car and pulled back into the driveway. Turned it off, the noise continued until i disconnected the battery. Won't crank/start. What just happened?

The starter is mounted between the engine and the firewall correct? That's where the noise is coming from.

Pssssttt the starter is telling you to replace me.....It worked this time but next time it won't....I would suggest replacing it and getting your battery tested for free at an auto parts store!

Exact same thing I went through with my last starter. Whack the solenoid a few times and that'll fix it temporarily, but yeah, looks like you're in the market for a new starter now.

You won't find many sellers in that market.

New solenoids can be found, though.

i'll do my best to take care of this before it takes care of itself.

I also just put a new axle in the rear driver side, and got 25.6mpg this last tank. Not related I think but the car feels great.

When the Starter is out see if you can get a look at the Teeth on the Ring Gear; the side that faces the Starter and inspect it.

I have several known good starters available. They never go bad on me so I have plenty. I'll sell one for $50 plus shipping. If interested give me your zip and I'll figure shipping.
