Sporadic A/C blower outage

I realize this isn't specifically a diesel issue, so maybe the moderator might move it appropriately. Or fine if it stays put here.

My E300D (1999) has an A/C blower motor that has occasionally decided to take a 1-2 day vacation. I'm not sure if it is tied to cooler or wetter weather, but it may be.

In any event, the climate control fan will not be functional and then at times when I reach highway speed it will kick back on. Then it will be available for an extended period, like a week or two. Then back to misbehaving. The electronics appear to be OK, nothing amiss with the displays.

Seems like a sensor or relay flaking out rather than just maybe the blower motor?

Thanks,

Chuck

Can you hear the flaps moving or any relays clicking? If so, it could be the brushes in the blower motor are worn out. I have had that happen to several blower motors in my 300SD.

Thanks so much. Yes, I do hear some flaps moving if I switch things around to defrost or recirculate. Would love if it were a simple solution, but also realize I don't get to choose!

Intermittent blower operation can be a sign that the blower's on its way out. That's how it was on my 92 300D at about the same mileage as your car.

Yeah, I'm actually up to about 198k now, so need to update my signature.

With my '82 300D, the blower was just behind a panel under the glove compartment... should I suppose this one is in as accessible a location, or no such luck?

Thanks lots!

Chuck

I drove my 99 for a year with an intermittent blower motor and the two covers off the interior passenger side fan. I found that if I reached under and gave the squirrel cage fan a nudge to the left that it would engage and begin to spin. Usually. Occasionally, i'd hit a pot hole and it would start itself up.

Was bad brushes. They aren't replaceable without cracking a factory sealed fan motor.

I replaced mine eventually and life was good again......
