Congratulations! You have come to the PeachParts Diesel Discussion, where we specialize in giving biased opinions based on grainy pictures, hearsay, and outright bias.

Before everyone shoots down his price, richclan here on the forum said that he got $11,800 for his 1985 300D with 60,000 miles. To quote from his post:

my 2 cents would be:
don't sell your cars for less than they are worth. wait it out if you can and you should get more.
i had 2 wholesalers offer me about 8K so i knew it was worth much more.

Its true, but I find the early w123's more a classic car stats then the 80s models....plus the color combo is so much nice...and there's no vacuum mess on the transmission

Wow. That looks sweet. Honestly, if it shows like it looks in the pics, and has the accompanying paperwork, I would take that at $6k before the '84 at $11k. In half a heartbeat.

I say again: what else can you get for that kind of money? Sometimes it helps to look away from the perspective of this forum (whose inhabitants tend to be on the, err, Scots side of spending) and look at the world around.

You can't get a worthwhile Volkswagen for that money. Not around here anyway.

A lot more like; 'the blind leading the blind.' No info other than the miles (which may be untrue) and some silly pics. Yeah, it's worth a fortune.

The part in bold is very true.

Around here rust free good running Type I's come up as low as $4000-5000 once in a while.

I think eleven is high, but not ridiculously so. Now if it doesn't drive like a fairly new car, if the low mileage can't be verified, if everything doesn't work as it should, or if that wetness at the front of the engine is something more serious (actually kind of looks like when my water pump went), then the price I'm willing to pay comes down, possibly by a whole lot.
I agree,....kind of........but I can't get over the underside pics.......

RE: The valuable underside pics. They almost look worse than my '83 300SD's underside, that had 305K miles put on it in 16-years.

I would not expect a car with a scant 1/4 the miles my 300SD had on it to almost look worse than the underside of a car I owned and drove to 305K.......just sayin'......

FWIW - the topside view engine compartment of my old SD looked marginally better than the topside pics. shown on this W123.

Do you mean the severely rusted exhaust pipe isn't normal

NOT a slam, just an observation of the car pictured - very filthy/soiled underside from grease/road dirt, etc.

......which reminds me:
Besides the rubber hanger bushings at the very rear of the system becoming brittle and wearing out.......the partial stainless steel (IIRC) exhaust system of the W126 I owned and drove, never wore out.

X2
Underside pics tell much more than other pics.
A good paint job can hide plenty. If a car has been on rough roads all its life, it shows underneath. I have seen cars in dealers yards that look great until you look under & see cross member damage from rocks.

The underside of that car is as clean as the underside of my 80k mile Chrysler that I wash the bottom of at least a few times a year. You guys are a tough crowd.

Remind me not to let any of you see the bottom of my 300D. I'd probably be banned from the forum. LOL
