Possible OM603.96x/OM602 A/C Compressor Upgrade & Compatibility Discussion.

I've been doing some research on what possible upgrades I could make to my 87 300TD A/C Compressor, equipped with a Denso 10P15C that was standard to early M103 W124 engines and early M102 and M103 W201 engines. Subsequent 603.96 and 602 W124 engines came with the slightly larger diameter Denso 10PA15C and the M103 W124 engines got the Denso 10PA17C. The upgrade to the Denso 10PA15C on my 603.96 would require the newer support bracket and possible the newer 602 hoses used on the 92-93 124.128 300D 2.5 Turbos.

I was really interested in fitting my extra Denso 10PA17C (from a 1991 103 engine), but could not identify any support bracket that would work on any 60X block. So, the Denso 10PA17C with its even larger diameter will just have to be satisfied occupying shelf space in the garage for now.

It does appear, however, that the 603.97 engines in W140 came with the even more biggerer Denso 10PA20C! I suspect the belt alignment would work if the clutch and pulley were swapped out from one of the six rib models. Even still, the eight rib pulley might work even if not spaced the same since only six of the eight grooves would need to line up. The compressors on the 140.135 are 0002302211 or 0002300011 and the brackets are 6052300342, 6052300142, 6051310035, or 6051310135, and possibly also 6051300035.

I also briefly looked into whether a 606 compressor and support might work for more capacity, but the manifold on the compressor looked too great for simpler fitment. Also, the increase in compressor capacity was not as interesting as the Denso 10PA20C's once I got on that track.

Here are the various sizes. Note that these illustrations do not necessarily have the proper manifold, clutch, and pulley for Mercedes use, but the body sizes should be accurate.

Here are some various pictures of 602, 603.91x, 603.96x, 603.97x, 605, and 606 engines, with and without the compressor support bracket and compressor so you can get an idea of fitment.

Of course, as always, I reserve the right to be wrong, but I welcome any corrections.
