Looks just like what's left of the hood pad in 300SD.

I remember that when I saw 1project2many's 300SD, there was carpeting installed as a hood pad. I meant to ask him about that but I forgot. I wonder if that could be an inexpensive solution?

Maybe you should try your block idea just above the turbo, and not bother with a full hood pad is what im saying.
Yes, i will do a small section of aluminum just out of curiosity and take some measurements and also see if there is any sound insulation differences w and w/o foam pad, then buy a foam pad to keep it original.

Notice most of the deterioration of the foam is on the passenger (turbo) side.

I installed aftermarket hood pads on my 72 and my 85 at about same time - I forget just when, but it must be 10 years ago or more. After one year they started to come off. I then removed hoods (to stop getting cleaning solvent on car), did a better job of preparing surface, applied 3 coats of 3M Super Trim Adhesive (8090 high temperature spray adhesive) to each side and re-installed. They still look like new. They don't have that eggcrate design. These are pics of my 72 SL, but 300D is same.
Got my hood pad in the mail.

Do I really need 2 cans of adhesive? They are $22 a can from Autozone (19 oz cans).

That's almost as much as the hood pad!

Considering the hood pad is going on 28-29 years old (assuming original) I don't think it's that bad. I just replaced the one on my 87 and was a mess. I ended up using a leaf blower.

I used one can of heavy duty spray adhesive and still have plenty left over. I'll check the can size.

The stuff I used was 3m Yellow Super Trim Adhesive 19oz can. I did the hood liner and used the stuff to glue a mirror back into the visor and it worked great. I still have 1/2 a can I would guess.

My '83 300SD's was disintegrating, so I helped it along by spreading a tarp over the engine cavity and going to town on the underside of the bonnet, with a putty knife and commercial wet/dry vac. Once and done!

I didn't miss it, or see any problems on the bonnet or paint going forward. This was a period of years and a lot of subsequent miles after it's removal, too.

Other than sound-deadening, what is the purpose of the hood pad? I rather liked the heightened sound of my 300SD @ idle/running at speed.

I only replaced the pad because it was my grandfathers car and I told myself I'd bring it back to what it looked like before. I put motor mounts in it yesterday and WOW... like a new car.

I don't mind the noise, but I need to get a new hoodpad for sound proofing....because frankly the loud noise of my car scares the daylights out of a lot of people.....specially if it is in first....going through a parking lot.....people give me that look that I am going 55 because of the high reeves.....just today a crossing guard gave me a horrible look....like i was speeding....but I was going 15mph.....so this is why I want a hoodpad

First time I did mine, I used 1 can for 2 cars. It wasn't the expensive type and it didn't last.

Second time, I used three cans, but did both cars. I may have posted earlier that 2 cans were needed. However, it is more like 2 or 3 coats. I think I put 2 coats on each side plus one extra on pad itself because it soaks in.

I know of people who have used standard contact cement as well as no more nails. But after my initial experience, I didn't want to experiment any more!

Don't have a wet dry vac here so did this with gloves goggles and a putty knife. Took about 3 minutes to get to this.

To get the foam stuck to the old glue took a lot more work. Took about 20 min w a razor scraper. The trick is to not push but slice with the scraper- much faster less effort and no blade breakage.
I think I just need to degrease and maybe wipe off what's left of the old glue then it'll be ready. What's a good solvent? Toulene?
