Glow plugs, I'm going to cry.
Help, I did a search but couldn't answer my problem.
My fuses, 80 amp, kept blowing. I disconnected the GPs, tryied again. No light (GP) came on, I reconnected the GP's, no fuse blow now, but no orange light. The car still wont start. Haynes tells me I have a relay on the fender wall, I don't. Anyone know where trhe relay is? The #1 GP just goes to ground. 1980 300TD, non turbo wagon. I'm going crazy. |

You don't have a digital camera you could take a pic of your engine compartment with do you ? I have a 1979 (non turbo) wagon I will go look at .... Greg
OK,, mine looks the same.. #1 glowplug is connected to the engine block at a bolt about 3 inches in front of it.... You almost certainly have a rectangular black box with the relay inside... keep looking on the "wheel house" (MB term)in the engine compartment.. surely somewhere in these archives are some helpful facts.... http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/search.php?action=showresults&searchid=114130&sortby=lastpost&sortorder=descending Greg Last edited by leathermang; 03-24-2002 at 11:40 AM. |

It's hard to see, but on the right of the photo is a relay box, it has two (one removed) relays of that small box type, there seems to be about 4 or 5 in various places in the car.
I will go and get one so i can change it all over the place just to see. Picture attached. |

Where is the 80 amp fuse that blows out? Mine is located inside the glow plug black box mounted on inside left fender front, (300SD).

MB Pre Glo Testing Method
What is the engine model number for this car? I have a MB diesel diagnostic manual that has a sections on testing the pre glow circuit if I know the engine number I'll check and see what it's got. If there is something I can probably scan it and E-Mail it to you.

The 80amp fuse is located on the firewall about 4 inches directly back from the #5 GP, it is not attached to anything else. The wires that come off go to a wire spliter type thing, some of the wires come out the back and go into the car, the others join the main loom and enter the car where most of the vacuum lines enter.
See pic The engine # I cannot find . The chassis is 123 183 120 12471 The Merc place up the road told me I had a 240, but it is a 300TD, no doubt, complete with the crappy ACC servo system. |

The chassis number you posted does not match the numbers which can be seen on the firewall in the picture....
What is the box at the bottom right of your picture that has the yellow paper in it... that should be part of the glo plug system.... maybe wires number 50 and 80 ... (?).. That is strange about the guy telling you it is a 240.... take a picture of the engine so we can count the number of cylinders.....LOL.... Greg |

Carn flab it you're right, the chassis # on the fire wall is 123 190 120 07628 mmm?
The box with the yellow paper is just the fuse box lid turned upside down. I counted the cylinders and they equal one hand |

It looks like to me that you have covered the pre glow timer with the lid to the fuse box... LOL.. really I think that is where it is supposed to be..and is on my 1979....I hope Billybob's info helped you .... keep us up on your progress... Greg

If you have the automatic glow plugs (GP), you have to have a relay someplace. I looked at my '80 300SD and it is easy to follow the 5 wires inside a sheath back from the GP to the relay. Try following the wires from the GP to the relay on yours.

Kyle:
Looks to me as if your relay is behind the firewall where the large plug that the wire goes to for the 80A fuse connects. You will have to remove the wiper arm and grille to replace it. Most likely you have a shorted glowplug -- you have the old series kind if you have only one wire to them. Check for something touching the wires between the glowplugs. If you can't find anything, take the wires off (remember which bits go where) and check for a short between the connetor on each plug and the block. Replace the plug with a short -- probably just carbon, but safer to replace. Peter

Slydel,
Do you have the automatic GP that turn on when you turn on the key switch or do you have to pull a lever or or turn a switch manually to energize the GP? By the orange light do you mean an actual light in the dash or a coil similar to a cigar lighter that glows red hot. If you have the kind of GP that you turn on manually, you won't have a GP relay and you have series type GP. It sounds like you have a shorted GP. I had one in a 220D once but it didn't blow a fuse but the wires got so hot, they started to smoke. You can check each GP without removing it with a sensitive ohmmeter. They will all have very low resistance values, but the shorted one will read lower than the others and will have almost zero ohms resistance. P E H |

The lid just covers the two small relays, nothing to do with GP's, I already changed them.
I will check behind the firewall, it seems that the relay must be there, and I am going to change the glow plugs one at a time, to see what happens? |

GP Fuse
Slydel, just a thought--the black box directly under the coolant hose in your picture looks suspicious Got a feeling its where the fuse is--or was, looks burned out-- Can you tell were the thick wire from it goes, the one going down in the direction of the glow-plugs? I cant see from here!:p
