Need help with turbo oil drain replacement (om617)
I am not strong enough to get the lower section of the drain tube out of the upper oil pan. Is there anyone near Vacaville CA that would have time to help me do it

Or you could take off the lower oil pan and use a jack to push the tube out.

How likely is that to crack the oil pan? I already hit it as had as I could with a hammer and punch from the bottom and it doesnt move at all.

Some People have said to get something and pick out or pull apart the Grommet from above so there is less you have to work against. Try not to scratch up the bore.
I have not read of anyone cracking the Upper Pan while working on the Turbo drain. But, that does not mean that it is impossible for that to happen. I used I think it was a 16mm Deep Socket as a Punch but which one I used is in the Thread. I've used the deep socket method to drive em out from below too. Don't remember the size of the socket.

So after disconnecting the top part of the tube, and cutting off as much of the seal as possible, I should use a socket and hammer or jack to push on it until it moves or something breaks? I doubt its stuck in there tight enough to crack the corner of the oil pan now that I looked at it closer, its pretty thick in that area.

People have said to actually go into the top and pic out pieces of the Grommet. The part that is above the surface will not have an effect of holding it in.
Mine was leaking there and was already lubed up. If yours is dry squirts some Oil around it after the Grommet is removed. After that there is no choice as it is made to come out the top that is the only way you can go.

The socekt on a jack works. I used an extension on the socket. It came right out. Someone (Army) posted about how to have a leak free 617. Look that post up for assembly.

One time I tightened a hose clamp on the tube and used a pry bar against the mount arm to pop it up.

I removed my oil,pan as it was leaking and pushed tube out.Alot of times,I'll use a small jack,to press stuff in,or out,as I have bad arthritis

The seal is hard as a rock, and yes its quite oily, thats why I decided to change it. I will have to just press it out with the jack and socket then and replace anything else that gets broken if it doesnt come out easily. From looking at other ones in the junkyard, the seal probably isn't normally this hard to get out since the other ones are still soft.

So did you remove the upper flange bolts that secure the upper turbo drain pipe?
I first loosened and removed the upper bolts(at flange), rotated the upper tube then pulled it apart from the lower tube. I then carefully broke off the grommet, gave the lower tube a few taps from all angles, and then proceeded to position a socket thru the lower opening and hitting it a few times until the lower tube popped up. All this was done with the OIL PAN OFF. To install, I placed the upper tube over the lower tube(with the seal slightly lubricated with silicone) and pushed them together. I slid the new grommet thru the bottom of the lower tube while the two tubes were joined together. The grommet was positioned approximately 1.5 inches below the lower and upper tube JOINT. The grommet must be in position to later slide down the lower tube to seal the opening around the lower tube. I then slid the second ring seal, with a slight dab of silicone, on to the lower end of the lower tube. So in my hand, I held the lower and upper tubes together but such union of tubes still loose and able to be rotated and with all seals in place. I positioned the assembly (lower and upper tube joined) into the lower opening and aligned it to the upper turbo flange. At this point you can rotate the entire assembly in either direction and can properly align the holes to the upper turbo flange holes so to then insert the bolts and secure the upper drain pipe. DONT FORGET THE GASKET between the upper pipe and turbo flange. Positioned yourself under the car where a socket (15mm or 16mm) is positioned again thru the lower opening and then tapped with a hammer slowly moving upeards and joining the lower tube into the upper tube. Keep tapping the socket until you feel it cannot go any further up. You must complete this step and must join the lower and upper tube completely. COMPLETELY Be sure to tightened the two flange bolts really good. At this point you should be able to slide the GROMMET seal down the lower tube and finally sealing the base of the opening that it is observed when looking down from up above. Install the oil pan with new gasket and proceed to add oil to the engine. I just performed the install of the lower turbo drain pipe and it was not hard. Hardest part is actually having to remove the air cleaner, taking each oil pan bolt off and reinstalling the bolts to the oil pan. No oil leaks at turbo drain pipe whats so ever. NONE. I regret not taking pictures or video. My hands were extremely dirty with oil and just could not use the camera. It is very very very messy job.. Hard to put into words without pictures. Sorry |

use some heat, it always works, you can always replace the tube but the pan is a *****
