Broken dipstick

Well. I'm sitting at a gas station right off the highway. The car was getting warm so I pulled over to check it. I went to pull the transmission stick. I hear a pop and there is no scale on it anymore. What should I do?

Thanks guys

Yeah... Too bad it's 9:00 and I'm at a gas station.

I need a new dipstick too so when I get the pan back on, I know the level.

Send a magnet on a stick to retrieve the rest of it.

... I gotta see a magnet that'll get that out! all mine would stick to the tube, and the pan, and everything else... but if it works, it's WAAAY simpler than dropping the pan, unless you are due for a fluid/filter change anyway...

I am sure I could use one. Just didn't want it to be this way.

This is for my 87 190DT.

There was a hotel near by. I pushed it into the parking lot and got a ride to my apartment. Will try to pull the tube tomorrow.

MB dipstick tubes go almost to the bottom of the pan. Unless the tip shattered, it should be safe to drive the car. Sadly, OM60x means there isn't a lower oil pan to simplify retrieving the tip if a magnet on a stick doesn't do it. If there's at least a removable side compartment like in the 603, you can check the pan for debris.

I believe he broke his transmission dipstick. I would worry about driving it with the piece floating around down there, but I'm not at all familiar with where the trans fluid uptake is on an automatic. If it was a stick shift you would not worry but a manual trans doesn't have a dipstick so forget I said that !

Yes the tranny dipstick.

I'm not driving it! I'm going back to it tomorrow to remove the tube. Hopefully it is just stuck in there.

I was thinking, wish I had a stick

I know on my car, the trans dipstick tube connects right to the bottom of the pan.....then the filter sucks fluid from the top of the pan....not from the bottom so anything falling into the bottom wouldn't get sucked up.....but I am not sure on the 190....if the filter has a pick up tube it could suck it in the filter....fyi I love my auto....love the stick too but the auto is my fav best part is the kickdown switch

Here is a picture of a filter.

Part #: 126-277-02-95-MY-INTBrand: Meyle

I doubt it will be floating a round since it is metal. should be laying on the bottom of the pan. the left picture is the side that goes towards the transmission, so I don`t believe it would get sucked into the by the looks of the filter design by looking at the other picture. It doesn`t suck off the bottom like the oil pump suction in the engine oil pan.

Source another Dip Stick and keep on driving till you need to change the ATF.
Maybe Iam all wet with my thinking on this, if so, throw me a Towel. .

The Manual Trans does actually have a Dip Stick to check the oil level.
it`s your finger. l
