sudden cacophony; how screwed am i?

1700 miles ago i had an indie shop put a no-EGR turbo 617 into my 240D. after i replaced the turbocharger, injectors, filters, ALDA tampering, diesel purge, valve adjustment, thermostat, fluids, etc., i finally got it running pretty nicely. still too much smoke when cold, which i guess may be down to IP timing, but nonetheless.

i had wanted to run B99.9 all along, in order to do a somewhat more sustainable thing with higher cetane and lubricity, and when i had achieved the above and changed out all the relevant fuel lines for viton, i went ahead and filled up on it. the result was amazing: my idle smoothed way out, good power, the engine seemed really happy. i watched the (now golden) prefilter for evidence of extra sediment being loosened by the solvent fuel, but it hadn't gotten particularly dirty.

last night on my way home from work the engine seemed louder than normal, more bangy or clacky. i wasn't sure if i was perceiving it correctly and thought it was likely that my air filter had fallen off again. i eased off and limped home as the noise, matching engine RPM, got louder and nastier. by the time i arrived it sounded like gnashing or scraping, as if something big was going without lubrication. to me, anyway, it was a very alarming sound.

it seems clear that i've damaged the engine. oil is still there and the coolant temperature was correct throughout (no oil pressure gauge yet, since i ended up with the 126 OF housing with electrical sensor). i haven't cranked the starter since. could an oil channel have gotten clogged up? what do you all think happened?

could be nearly anything... alternator, fan clutch, rod bearings, Mains, cam issues, timing chain, torque converter, transmission front pump or bearings, it's a big list of possibilities...
how are the motor mounts?

I would have pulled over and checked the oil level right away, but you say that checked out?

Probably add vacuum pump to that list of things to check.

did you lose any oil? Is there any oil in your coolant ? did you pull the valve cover to take a peek ? Will the car start ? Anything tangled up in the belts ? Can you isolate where the sound is coming from vs. the "engine bay"?

Not enough information to do any debugging, buddy.

I'd pop the hood and check the usual things... oil level, oil quality, pull the oil filter, check for bits. Look for things that are loose. Pop the valve cover, check what you see. You can do all these things without starting the engine.

Good luck!

No reason it has to be anything really serious.

Very bad idea to drive without an oil pressure gauge. Warned a friend of mine about that once. He ignored the warning and destroyed his engine. Get one in there ASAP.

OK folks, thanks for responding, these are good things to check. i will pull the valve cover and inspect the chain, check the coolant for oil, and check the oil for detritus.

no oil was lost. i checked it as soon as i stopped.

the motor mounts were new at the time of the swap. it's manual so i can rule out TC/trans pump issues.

what should i look at vis-a-vis the alternator and vacuum pump?

You could remove the belt and try to spin them by hand.

Was the rear end or trans upgraded to match the turbo engine?

Video of sound would help diagnose.

cooljjay, trans no (it's manual), diff yes (2.88), but since the noise didn't abate with the clutch disengaged, i don't think the problem was back there.

kerry, i think i'm going to rebuild the cluster to include an electrical movement rather than swap to the other OF housing. however, i agree. if and when i start it again i will record the sound. last night it wasn't going to happen.

ichris, will spin them by hand.

thanks everyone for all your support!!!

I'd just grab a cluster from the junkyard with an electric oil pressure gauge and stick it on the dash or console and hook it up to get the info in the meantime. Or maybe just get a cheap aftermarket electric gauge and hook it up to the sender.

A lose air cleaner is louder than some mechanically worse noises, but I'd narrow the source down before driving far. A piece of hose or screwdriver can be a useful mechanic's stethoscope. Well, worse comes to worse, you didn't scrap the 616 did you?
