You might own a diesel IF........

You might own a diesel IF....

....you have a false feeling that you'll never ever have to buy another car.

.....you have ever used DAWN dishwash in the shower.

..... your garage and driveway is covered with oil stains.

.....your on the PULL-A-PART quick call list when a new MB donor arrives.

....you pass restaraunts wondering if they have good grease instead of good food.

No, I'm sure I will buy other cars.

Yes, well actually a generic dishwash. Consumer Reports basically said that shampoo is the same as dishwash liquid except with thickeners and perfumes. They were right.

-you know more about repairing your car than the dealership technicians.

-you've had sheriffs respond to a noise complaint, because you left your car idling on the street for 20 minutes

-you drive behind semi trucks going up a grade. on purpose.

-you realize how few gas stations have diesel.

-when you ride in other peoples' cars, you keep thinking they shut the engine off when you are stopped at a light.

Well, I am in the minority running a W124 diesel compared to most of you guys running a W123 diesel... but...

I can't relate to ANY of these things...

  1. Outside the car a mechanic can tell it is a diesel, though that is often said as a question rather than a statement.
  2. Inside the car you would never know.
  3. With the windows open tyre noise is louder than the engine, and I can hear the engines of all the other cars around me.
  4. Under power it has a nice straight six burble from the exhaust.
  5. It can keep up with anything else on real roads, with ease.... in town driving I hardly ever exceed 1500 RPM, any more than that and I'm on the brakes to avoid rear ending the car in front.
  6. CDi engines, even MB ones in other cars, are a lot noisier than mine.
  7. This W124 300D has the small clock and big tacho, my last one had the big clock and no tacho, at tickover with the windows shut you could hear the clock ticking.
  8. My cars still have the original MB sound deadening, under the hood, under engine trays, etc etc, makes a big difference and keeps what noise there is inside the engine bay.
  9. Basically does everything a petrol engine does, plus slightly better mpg, but mainly does it for far far far longer.

You might own an older diesel IF....

...the neighborhood thug steals "gas" from your tank, and you just smile

...you request rubber gloves and rags for Fathers Day and Birthdays.

...if you have to mumble to yourself 'gasoline, gasoline, gasoline' when pulling into the local gas station to fill up your Mom's Camry....because you default to going to the diesel pump.

You might own a diesel IF....

1. Your garage is stocked with a years supply of various fuel and oil filters.
2. You always have more than 2 gallons of fresh engine oil on your garage shelves.
3. You wear rubber gloves to do any maintenance under the hood.
4. All of your "used" oil storage bins are always full.
4. All of your t-shirts have some sort of black stain and or diesel smell on the front and back. I quit buying white t-shirts!!
5. You get in your other car/truck (a gasser) and wait before turning the key, feeling stupid once you realized you were waiting.

Older diesels,

Your left forearm is twice the size of your right and you're right handed.
