Beeing in the position of having kids with mental health disorders I guess I'm one of the few that wouldn't have an issue with hiring someone with a mental health condition. Honestly though, you're right, most employers would take a pass on it, either out of ignorance or fear of liability.
Probably best course is wait till the disability kicks in, then pick up work from home IT sidework and keep the income under your disability limit. I know my son could earn up to 5k a year in this state and keep his disability status, he just isn't functional enough to work.

I so agree....one time i didn't get a job because my hair wasn't long enough....employers are not very thoughtful or caring....
That is my plan, to get my disability and then start my business back up. I was an antique dealer focusing on vintage hifi audio specializing in speakers as well as repair....i was making 40-60k a year....but sadly i lost all my inventory, my house, my cars, my partner and my mental state in one night....my neighbor was nice enough to report everything to the insurance adjuster so all my claims were denied....so i was forced out of california due to media...and into my mothers house in arizona....
I lost my heath insurance as i wasn't able to pay for it, the medication i need costs 3000$ a month....so i was off that for a year.....caused the arthritis to flare up in my spin and cause nerve issues....
I consistently say, someone in my family must have ticked off a gypsy and i was left with the curse...my father did drive through the side of a mortuary and knock over the casket....then fled the scene....
