om603 R.I.P.

Well, what can I say. Was driving the car to work today, and that little annoying tick started. Turned to a knock and felt like it was running on 5 and then the engine went boom and shut down.

And engine is dead... - YouTube

guessing this is not going to be good...

anyways. the hunt is now on for a good motor. leaning toward just sticking a 606 in it.

Watched the video. Doesn't sound good. How many miles does the engine have?

This is the video as I pulled over, right before the engine popped. I was driving to work when it started to tick, I pulled over to get this, car went another 2 blocks and literally went boom.

Hmmm engine issue on 603 - YouTube

Note the temp, oil bouncing.... car felt like it was running on 5 cylinders and shaking.

229k according to odometer. But I just looked at the timing chain not a week ago and it was right on the money. So I know that's was not the issue here.

No, the car came back to me with a tick in the head. Which I have questions since I got it back. Obviously something wrong with the install of the new HG's. The head was fully pressure tested and cleaned before it was installed. (or so they say)... I will have to go down there now and have a few words and see what they are going to do about standing behind their work (which I was told they did).

I have about 1700 in the HG job, including with the head I had to buy, the HG kit, the new water pump etc. Not to mention the stuff that they screwed up during the fix (lick jamming and bending waste gate rod, messing up all the ip lines etc.

for the gauge to be pulsing like that along with the noise i would guess rod bearing and or low on oil, was there any oil lost when this happened? what is the oil level now?

Oils right on the money. Tried to crank and it builds oil pressure. Valve cover off later today and head this coming week.

Mine was similiar on a 602 4cyl diesel ,it wouldnt run after I had parked during a drive ,during the drive it had very low power made sounds very close to what your cars engine sounds like, towed it home .The Short story is it had a broken cam ,was sheared in two parts ,the chain would allow cyl 1-3 to turn with compression but a the 4th cylinder their was no movement for the valves to open and close due to the cam failure, take your valve cover off and Im beating youll see the same issue. If you can replace just the cam ,yahoo, the original cam has done its job for those many ,many yrs of service.

... I have a GREAT conditions 603 with the #22 head installed. RUNS VERY STRONG in my soon to be parts car 87TD... make a FAIR offer, and I'll consider it.
I was driving the car with intentions of restoring it from the tbone it endured under yountman's care... but the extensive rust, and the expense of ANOTHER radiator just made me pull the plug.
I do NOT need to sell the motor, as I have two other TD's that could use it someday... but it's available for the right price.
