Yes, it is possible to grease the sunroof cable (there's only one) without completely removing the sunroof. You do have to remove a bunch of stuff though, to get the cable out. If your sunroof is not moving smoothly, then you probably have sticky tracks. Never hurts to grease the cable, but the tracks need cleaning and lubrication more frequently than the cable does. If the sunroof moves slowly, but smoothly, then you may just need to adjust the drive clutch.

If it gets stuck open there is a spot in the trunk, under a flap or behind the lining, on the driver sidewall, where a socket wrench can be used to manually crank the sunroof closed.

The Cable

You do not have to remove the sunroof panel but you do need to remove the sunroof headliner to get access to components. The cable runs in a tube from the front of the sunroof panel to the motor-gearbox in the left side of the trunk.

The most common source of a slow-running sunroof is old, dried grease in the tube and on the cable. If your roof runs better when it is warmed by sunlight or in warmer temperatures, you can be sure that is the problem. I have dealt with this and the repair went well.

The procedure is long but not difficult. I recommend the "kit" offered by mercedessourxx.com. It contains instructions, the correct greases and a bore brosh and wire arrangement for cleaning the inside of the tube.

This is not a difficult job and very satisfying when finished.

Sun Roof Cables are NLA, I pulled one in the yards for my Indy.

Open the roof 1/2 way. pull down along the front edge of the liner. there are 6 clips that pop into holes. Be careful not to bend the front edge.

Pull the liner forward and out the top through the opening. Curve it up. not down into the car.

Remove 2 or 3 8mm screws to disconnect the cable bracket, there is a clip I believe I removed and the bracket comes off.

In the trunk behind the flap on the left side, turn the plastic nut on the SR motor to unscrew the cable to the closed position.

Once it is clear of the gear in the motor, pull it out.

It is greasy, so have your lovely consultant give you a hand holding your cable.

Forget the msource kit, it is useless....the problem is the old grease in the tracks and motor....it turns rock hard and sticky. The only way to fix this is to remove the cable, then remove the motor and degrease it all....then regrease it. The motor, cable and tube are easy to degrease....the tracks not so easy with the sun roof in place. Its the only way to truly get the sun roof working 100%.

Heres a good diy link...
