Gaskets
I'm about to change some gaskets on my 300sd Turbo Diesel '82 and am wondering about the sealant to use. I want to change the following:
oil pan gasket turbo drain pipe gasket inhale/exhaust manifold gasket i think i need a sealant for the first two but am no sure, any tips? i bought a tube of lactate 2 gasket sealant, non hardening. I was also wondering how I should torque the nuts on the oil pan. thanks!! |

I would use sealant on the Oil Pan but that my way of doing things. The Paper Gasket at the top of the Oil Drain tube should have some type of gasket stuff that acts as an adheseive to stick it to one side. The reason for that is so it does not fall off while you are trying to position the Drain Tube. No matter what you do you need to get off all of the Old Gasket Material or in the case of the Turbo Drain parts that seal with Rubber it needs to be cleaned. The Rubber Grommet may not seal correctly if there is dirt between it and the sealing area. The other parts of the Drain Tube are sealed witn 2 O-rings and a Rubber Gromment. You don't need sealant on the and in fact you need lubrication on the which kind of rules against any sort of sealsnt. On My year and Model the Intake/Exhaust Manifold Studs only have about 4 full threads where the Studs screw into the Cylinder Head. You need to be carfull not to over tighten them. No torque on them is posted in the Manual. Check the Manifolds with a precision Straight Edge to determine if they are warped (My exhaust Manifold turned out to be a little warped). Again this is just my way of doing things. I reused My Manifold Gasket and Turbo Exhaust Mounting Gasket by coating it with Kopper Kote. While the adhesive part of the Kopper Kote is going to burnoff the tiny pieces of Copper mixe into it are going to say, squash and help to seal. I don't know the Pan Blot Torqe.
