Clutch questions

Hey PeachParts,

I am finally off of school and I have some time to work on my engine. I am drilling out stripped bolts on my OM617.952 flex plate and have a couple of questions.

1) I am not going to bother with balancing the flywheel with the flex plate. I dont have the time to do it, as the city is going to tow the car out of my driveway if its not running by the 23rd of this month.

2) About the clutch, do the pressure plate and clutch have to be balanced together? I did not mark where they were positioned, and I just read that they were balanced together. Is this going to be an issue putting it back together? I could always get a new clutch, but its rather expensive so I'd rather not.

3) Does anyone have or can take a picture of what the bolts that bolt the clutch to the f/w look like? They are lost in the shop somewhere and I cant find them.

4) Do I fill the transmission with oil from the same place where it is drained? I'm not sure where it is filled.

Any help on this topic is much appreciated.

-Josh

I am not sure about the Terminology any more.
The part with the Springs and Metal Pressure Plate are normally balanced as a separate unit and can be bought separately.
The Friction Disc can be bought by itself and is individually Balanced.

The Flywheel is Balanced to the Crankshaft and that means the Friction Plate and the Pressure Plate can be changed with out issues.

If your Car does not have an Automatic Transmission it should not have a Flex Plate.

Concerning the Bolts. There is different sized Flywheels. I don't know if that means the Clutch Bolts might be longer or shorter on some Flywheels or not.

Also do you have a 300D Flywheel in it or is it a 240D Flywheel?

There should be another Plug up higher for filling the Transmission. You fill it until Fluid/Oil starts to run out of the upper Plug Hole.

On My Diesel Volvo there is 2 Pins in the Flywheel. There is corresponding Holes or Notches in the outer Sheetmetal Housing of the Pressure Plate that those Pins must go into or it would indeed be out of Balance. However, in the Pics I have seen of Mercedes Flywheels I have not seen any such pins on it.
No have I seen on the USA Made Cars I have owned that had Manual Transmissions.

I looked these up and both 240D and 300D with non-automatic Transmissions have the same part numbers. It does not say if they are Allen Head or Hex Head Bolts or the length.
Also the entire part number may start with N or an A but they normally do not use that when looking up Parts.

Manual Clutch to Flywheel Bolts
000912008012 SCREW, Clutch pressure plate to flywheel, M8x22
912004008102 LOCK WASHER, Clutch pressure plate to flywheel

I got the info from this site:

the automatic and stick have different length flywheel bolts. I believe the automatic bolts are longer.

This is a site from the UK that shows mounting a Mercedes Clutch. It has a parts list in Post #19 and it has the same part number for the Clutch Bolts. In the Pic they show they are Allen Head Bolts.

I think He is speaking of the Bolts that bolt the Clutch Pressure Plate to the Flywheel. And, that is the Parts that I looked up.

What I cannot find is how long the Bolts are supposed to be.

Those Bolts have an MSRP of $2.50 at the Dealer
The Lock Washers have a NSRP of 90 Cents

Wow, this thread got large while I was away. I've been super busy with other arrangements.

Do you happen to have a link to those bolts Diesel 911? It would be easier for me to just purchase new ones. EDIT: Saw it above , guess I'll be making a trip to the dealer tomorrow as well.

I already purchased the specific manual transmission flywheel bolts for the 240D flywheel earlier.

I also have decided to balance the flywheel since there is a place in Sacramento that can do it.

I have no idea what transmission I have yet, I havent scraped off the grime to see the number on it, its from a 1980.

I know others have already answered some of these. I'll just throw in my answers.

As stated above, a flex plate is a flywheel for an automatic. You most likely don't have one. The clutch and flywheel aren't normally balanced together anyway, since they don't stay in the same position relative to each other.

Not balanced together. They move differently on the input shaft, so it wouldn't make sense to balance them together.

Sorry, can't help you with that one. From the last Mercedes clutch job I did (on a W113) all I remember is that they look very bolt-like.

4) Do I fill the transmission with oil from the same place where it is drained? I'm not sure where it is filled.
Drain plug is on the bottom. Fill plug is about midway up the left side of the transmission IIRC.

No problem. This forum is kind of like me getting to practice the diagnostic aspect of mechanic work without getting my hands/shirt/pants dirty. It's a little like getting to be Dr. House.

If you are replacing an automatic transmission with a manual transmission, I believe it has been pretty well established that because the factory balanced the engine crankshaft assembly (harmonic balance on front of engine, and then either the flex plate (automatic transmission) or the flywheel (manual transmission)). So in order to avoid causing an unbalanced condition, the "new" flywheel should be match-balanced to the old flex plate, and then the flywheel needs to be mounted in exactly the same orientation on the crankshaft that the flex plate was mounted, in order to preserve the balance of the two assemblies when connected.

I think that some have reported finding an orientation mark on the end of the crank and matching mark on the flex plate, but if it were me, I would have used a punch or some other permanent method to mark both before taking the flex plate off.
