Am I likely to find much carbon below the injector? To be fair, I think the last person who put a wrench on it was a German.
Mybe not. When I was in Germany in Munich you would see a lot of Turkish and Greek workers that were employed at the BMW Plant. It is likely Mercedes does the same.
Of course there is quite a few Turkish and Greek Parents of Babies born in Germany. The Babies are German Citizens or are considered Legal residents.

Could be, i'm still assuming it was a German unless i'm proven wrong. Did you enjoy your time in Munich?

I enjoyed the 2 October fests I went to. However, I was In Germany when I was in the Army and most trips to Munich were only for a day.

I benifited from being in the Army but did not enjoy it and especially being out in the Field in that awful Winter Weather. But, it was safer then being in Vietnam.

Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but I'm a bit of a noob and need some clarification. I am in the process of replacing injectors, and the threads are very cruddy. So after the cleaning, it is safe to crank the engine (without the injectors installed) to blow out whatever crud fell into the pre chamber? That seems wrong, but then again I'm new at this.
Thanks.

903hblue See: Funola's reply (# 7) to this very post

But,when I first acquired the First OM602 it had cunningly designed little
plastic caps that the Injectors fit through ,which totally prevented any
debris/crapola/smersch dust from contaminating the spaces between the
injectors and the injector holes in the head!

They succumbed to MB Plastico Death
(Which ALL plastics under-hood do,eventually)
AND the parts guys @ the dealerships told me they were unobtainium.

A Wunnerful idea from Stuttgart that vanished!

[Anybody know current "Engineers" in Deutschland? Ask them to please

compress ignite, yes, I have read that reply, thank you. I am trying to verify if he meant crank the engine with no injectors installed.

The best/ safest way is to vacuum the debris in the pre-chamber. Use a small tubing that fits into the injector hole, duct taped to the vacuum cleaner hose. There are small openings in the pre-chamber which could let debris into the combustion chamber during the intake stroke when cranking. If this debris gets between the valve sealing surfaces or wedged in the piston ring grooves, however remote that possibility is, it cannot be good for the engine.

If you know that crud fell in, try to vacuum it out first. After that, crank away for a bit.

Vacuum time

Hi,

I would like to remind folks that the electric vacuum and solvents can be a good lesson in stoichiometry. Non-petroleum soaps will work.
If you want to clean, a small, stiff stencil brush with a good solvent will loosen the particles- and a venturi-type vacuum with a small Tygon hose will get around obstacles.
The venturi-type vacuum operates off compressed air, there is no electric motor, no spark.
Trust me- a stiff stencil brush, good solvent, and a venturi vac will clean it up in a hurry.

Cheers,

snapped_bolt

I suppose you could turn the engine over by hand while vacuuming each pre-chamber, so that when the intake or exhaust valve is open, air can flow and the vacuum will be more effective.
