Tomorrow begins the somewhat long and daunting task of paint correction, sadly no DA polisher but I'll do what I can without.

Order of operations
Rinse
Wash with dawn
Wash again with optima no rinse
Clay entire car
Dry
Clean the paint with Sonax Premium Paint cleaner
Treat every panel with Meguiars Show Car Glaze #7
Wax with Dodo Juice purple haze

A sample of how well the paint has cleaned up

Shot with an iPhone. I'll use a real camera during and after.

Paint cleans up pretty good.

I can't wait to see the paint shine. It may be somewhat original (I found evidence of re spray) but it will be better than chalky paint.

I need to get the anodized trim to shine as well. Kent over at the source has some proprietary compound he sells but I'm pretty sure someone here has figured it out.

Anybody know the part number for those cowl vent clips? I need a set.

Never mind, found them..

It's in in my list.

It's coming along nicely. Car was repainted at some point. Looks decent from 10-15' away. Paint cleaner does wonders by the way.

Got to love the stupid little door on the door locks. Went to put the key in and it jammed the door open and now I have to figure out how to fix that since the key won't go on. The little door went sideways and twisted it self.

This is the second Benz that has done that to me. I hate those little doors on the key hole.

Did the car originally come with clear coat? When you're done, can you do mine?

TheDon 11-16-2014 12:41 PM

I do not think they were clear coated in the old days unless it was a metallic flake paint like anthracite grey.

I'm going to get a porter cable DA

bt1211 11-16-2014 09:47 PM

harbor freight has a knock off Porter-Cable for $70 that I been using to sand a car down for a friend. I can't get his car close enough to use my air powered DA so I thought I would try it. It's working well for me. part no. 69924. It has a hook and loop pad so I can use the 6" paper I already have.

I know HF has some less than pro tools but for irregular usage tools, they are OK with me.

No pics of Uttini gleaming like a new penny? :(

Acetone to remove the clearcoat from the trim, then mother's aluminum polish, then wax. Don't get any acetone on the paint...

TheDon 12-21-2014 11:50 AM

I haven't had any time to polish the paint. Being a teacher sucks. I have no free time and I get paid crap for 70 hours of work.

Plus this car is a constant disappointment. I got a new alternator adjustment bolt and now. I have to replace the upper bracket. Thankfully. I found a bracket in the junkyard that doesn't have screwed up teeth. But the battery does from sitting for two weeks which sucks. I've killed the battery like 6 times already. I'm just tired of not having time and when I have it to do any work crap like this happens so I have to wait and then wait more for wen I have time to work on the sheissewagen.

And the battery is shot.

Charged it for 24 hours and the charger is showing a full charge but only at 6 volts. Awesome.

You killed the battery when you ran it down to zero when you left the glow plugs on overnight. Lead acid batteries do not survive long after such incident.

How is the manual glow plugs working otherwise? Did you rewire it to switched +12 with a buzzer?
