She's Down...

The Mercedes suddenly was down on power starting early June; not sure exactly as a lot on my mind. Finally got the boost gauge installed about a week ago and only producing a couple pounds unless I really load it for a couple minutes then might hit 8 p.s.i.. So decided to try without the A.L.D.A. the only difference is spooling a tad faster and on the freeway sits at about 4 p.s.i..

So the question is what is going on?

If the turbo charger was bad, wouldn't it produce no boost? Why would it drop? Do they need to be continually adjusted?

Thank you so very much in advance!

There is nothing to adjust on a turbo except for the waste gate.
A Turbo either works or it doen`t.

Have you checked the boost line from the rear of the Intake manifold to the Switch Over valve and then to the ALDA?

As noted above, change the fuel filters first, as well as the tank screen if your feeling ambitious. Once your satisfied that the fuel system is working correctly you can adjust the wastgate to get your boost back. The springs grow weaker over time and they loose boost.

Thank you all for the replies!

I tried the filters, remember? Both were changed an no improvement.

I adjusted the turbo charger not more than a year ago to about 14 p.s.i.. So time to do it again?

As for the tank screen I am willing but the 46mm wrench is at home.

I think I know, how does fuel limit boost pressure?

Before changing the strainer in the tank try some biocide first. It will kill the bacteria and it should come right through the strainer and filters afterward.

Thank you so very much for the help!

Is bacteria like black grit? I had that in the pre filter.

I have some biocide, but forgot to bring it... Will see about getting some today.

Bought the bioside, and man is it expensive! It is 16 treatments at most. I put in double as didn't have a measuring tool and wanted to be sure the test results were accurate.

Need to use all 10 gallons, right?

That sounds like a lot of biocide. Which brand are you using? I remember using only 8oz of startron before.

16 ounces of Bio something, don't think Biobor. White bottle with clear measuring side. Very strong smelling. I put it in the emergency supplies.

Wasting time with biocide...I think your problem is on the exhaust side. Try disconnecting the exhaust and see if you get your mojo back. If that doesn't work, check to see if your wastegate is open. If that doesn't work, pull off the intake hose and check if the turbine spins easily: it could be clogged with carbon.

Thank you so very much!

Could this explain better performance once the engine has run at least a half hour?

How many miles ago did you change your fuel filter?

They can still be clogged, even with a "recent" fuel filter change. I've gotten a bad load of fuel and completely clogged new filters in way less than 100 miles. Took three filter changes before I ran all the junk out of my tank. Spendiest tank of fuel I ever bought, and will never go to that station again.
