1984 190D W201 advice

I was fiddling around in my 190D with a friend who actually knows what he was doing. However, he had to go before we could finish putting some things back together. Long story short, I have some ventilation tubing that broke and I need some guidance on replacing it and making the right connections. Hope you can help me out.

My condolences to his family. How did you dispose of the body? That's always tricky.

Looks to me that breather tube is broke, but that tube goes into another tube. It's part of the breather tube system where it put the blow by oil back into the engine. The rest of the tubes are on the intake manifold, you can't miss where it plugs in.

^Right. That tube comes off the valve cover and goes into a short rubber section that plugs into the nipples of intake runners for cylinders 2 and 3. Then, a short straight piece of tube connects cylinder 1 and 4 to the center section, and 1 & 4 have right angle nipples that go down to the dinner.

If that breather tube coming off the valve cover is broken, you'll need to improvise. It's almost impossible to get that right angle elbow out after 30 years hardening from heat. It's incredibly brittle. You can't push it out from underneath either since the oil mist separator is riveted onto the valve cover and blocks it.

I have a 190d 2.2, I really like these 190d's. So economical and reliable. Holding on to mine as long as I can.

Just go to the dealer and get a new tube, the right angle fitting and the rubber grommet. If your valve cover gasket is old, get one of them too. These plastic parts die from heat/vibration/oil. If you replace all of the parts, you will help end the leaks.
Looks like I will be at the dealer quite a bit, I just picked up another '84 190D to replace my wrecked one.

Off to the dealer then, seems like it should be an easy fix. Thanks for the tips, and I'll remember to put everything back before I murder any more mechanic friends.

Thanks again.

Like I said, be really careful trying to take that right angle elbow out of the valve cover. You'll break it and then you'll have a real hard time trying to remove the broken piece from inside the oil separating baffles.

Be leery ordering these types of parts online. Unless its genuine MB its going to be inferior quality and will last about 1/20th as long. Learned that the hard way with the breather/vac lines on my M116 engine.

The OM601 is great! I've been driving mine all the time lately, I actually enjoy it more than my V8....maybe there's something wrong with me.
