i give up...

STILL has issues starting when cold! I have done injectors, glow plugs, glow plug holes, new battery, new glow plug temp sensor, getting correct voltage at each plug, correct resistance in all the harness wires.

most recently, i replaced the glow plug temp sensor and it made the problem worse! tons of white smoke, missing an running like poo until it gets to temp. i guess because now the light stays on for only 2-3 seconds when it's in the 80s out.

however, when i disconnect the glow plug temp sensor and let the glow plugs burn for 15-20 seconds it fires right up, no smoke, no miss and runs smooth.

WTH am i missing!!!??

for now, i have zip tied the disconnected temp sensor harness to the dip stick tube and i am just letting them burn like i said for 15-20 seconds. Is there any harm in doing that until i figure out what the heck is going on?

For what its worth, if you wait after the light goes out on the dash, the glow plugs are still running. The whole cycle is 60 seconds. Just don't turn the key as soon as the light goes out.

Have you verfied your timing, and checked compression?

You may have a leak letting in air into your fuel system when sitting overnight. Put a clear hose at the filter T's 5/16 barb (where cigar hose is). If you see foamy fuel from a cold start, you have air. Should have solid fuel there at all times.

So what is the starting issue exactly?
Describe your method of starting a cold engine and how long everything is taking, each phase of key twist, how long you crank, etc and the response of the car at each phase, lights on dash, sounds, etc

Are you getting any nailing that accompanies the white smoke? Can you see any air bubbles in either clear line by the injection pump?

no air in clear fuel lines, although i need to replace those soon and have no idea where to get them.

apparently, the problem is i was trying to start the engine right after the light on the dash went out. At diesel paul's suggestion after the light went out, 3 seconds after turning turning the key, i waited about 25 seconds before starting, and all was fine.

as a kid we had a 81 vw rabbit diesel that also had the dash glow plug light and we would start it as soon as it went out. After seeing youtube videos, and the guy i bought it from telling me, i just assumed it was supposed to start right up and be fine as soon as the light went out.

With a good running 61x, it starts right up if I take the time to put on the seatbelt before cranking the engine.

I know it's a different car, but it kind of sounds like you might have the same problem a few of us were talking about here:

Rough Starting Question

The way others talk, these cars are all supposed to start off of one glow cycle and idle smooth as butter when it's -40° out, so you might read through that thread and see if it sounds familiar. I haven't gotten mine figured out yet, though the OP in that thread seemed to have some luck. If you do have that problem it's not going to be fun as it gets colder.

can you elaborate on the vac flap?

side note, when I did the glow plugs I had to pull the intake. I cleaned about 5 pounds of sludge out of it, but I neglected to do the same to the egr valve
