A lost fan belt and the decision to drive it home

As it has happened over the years another road side decision was made to save a wrecker service fee, about 7 miles from home a made the choice to top of the radiator and head for home ,the outside temp was 80 degrees and made it easier to keep the already taxed cooling system on the drive in check. My gauge stayed at 110 with no change ,i could hear the overflow cap releasing pressure when I stopped at lights and turned of the key til a green came up,never exceeded 45 mph and a slow move it was ,after arrival I popped the hood and the fluid loss was about 1/2 a gallon .A new belt tomorrow ,hopefullly no gremlins to find when I drive it out again.

What he said... unfortunately...
the question is... did that loss of belt cause the Water Pump to not be turning ?
Do you not have electric fans ?

I sure hope you didn't destroy your motor trying to save $80.

Buy two belts and throw the spare in your trunk. Call your insurance company and add roadside assistance and towing to your policy. Roadside assistance on my older vehicles cost me $15/yr, my newer ones are $6/yr.

I'm not saying everyone has to be a McGyver but there probably were options that would be easy to implement and would help to avoid the risk.

It doesn't matter how much coolant is in the system if it isn't circulating. How cold does a fully charged AC system blow when the compressor isn't engaged.

Ignore the nagging nellies. I also found both fan belts missing in my 1985 300D many years ago, after a thick piece of metal popped up in heavy interstate traffic and hit under the engine. I drove 12 miles home on the interstate, keeping engine load low, and probably 60 F outside. Coolant temp crept to 100 C so I left the interstate and drove the final 4 miles at 35 mph, w/ temp holding. Usually, I tie a nylon rope to keep at least the water pump turning, but it was dark and I was tired after class and the engine was marginal anyway (250 psig compression, hard to start in winter). Coolant still circulates from "natural convection" and many people (w/ gas V-8's) have found their water pump vanes corroded away or the shaft broken and had driven that way for a year, sometimes boiling over. With cast-iron heads, you are unlikely to damage the engine. Of course, if you drive 10 miles up a mountain grade at 60 mph you could.
