the pin numbers should be molded into the plastic of the connector itself as well. you might be able to recognize the "preresistance" on the schematic because it is one of the only places in the whole system with large resistors (2 of them, i guess?).

Yes the numbers are there, albeit almost invisible on the female plug.

But how does that help me when the wires are not numbered?

Do the wiring colors correspond to a standard numbering scheme?

Maybe I ought to mention that this is my first ever crack at a wiring diagram, apart from following an explanation in a thread on window switches (much easier).
