Brass Rings

Well, I finally got the last of my parts from Germany to put the Getrag back together. I took some pictures of the brass rings 1&2 & 3&4th gears. They didn't look to bad at first, but after getting the new ones I could immediately see the problem with them. They wear the finger areas going in the sliding collars. Also, the sides and faces tolerances are subject to wear. After having one apart, I can understand why Mercedes wants the ATF type of fluid used in them. There are lots of oil channels that are designed to help lubricate the synchronizers and keep the units lubricated at different times of usage. Gear oil or heavier oil would not be my choice in one. I took in on a few drives and it is like a new car with the way that it shifts now! No more waiting to get it into gear! It was a long wait getting through it on the parts etc. I think, I had it up in the air approximately 6 weeks or maybe longer. I had tried flushing, and different types of oils from help on the forum, but in the end it's not going to repair a tired transmission with wear on the collars and rings. I didn't have to replace and gears though.

This gives me renewed inspiration to go through the 717.400. Im still trying to figure out this third gear vibration i have going on around 25- 30 mph. If I shift at higher RPM from second it does not happen. Still need a tach install as well so no RPM verification for now.

That doesn't sound like a transmission problem to me.

Bricktron thanks for the hands up on the transmission job! I was wanting to mention an unbelievable on the test drive. I was coming back home turning down the street to my place, when I thought I better reset the clock. I had had the battery disconnected the whole time the care had been apart with the transmission out. I noted the time on the clock, and glanced at my wrist watch. Would you believe that the clock in the Mercedes was only 7 minutes slower on the exact hour different than my wrist watch?? After all that time, and be so close to when it went off, after disconnecting the battery initially.

Would you mind posting your link or info on part suppliers in Germany? I need a 2nd gear synchro (I think). Thanks in advance.

In answer to your question on getting parts in Germany, the only place I am aware of is Mercedes Benz. The Getrag transmissions are very difficult to get parts for anymore like the key parts required to rebuild with. Some of the kits there were only like maybe two when I had my order. So, I bought like 2 etc. Something like a tail shaft seal is no problem. I got the last part of my synchronizers from some dealer on the east coast. The earlier transmissions might be easier to acquire parts for, but they are not the same. My suggestion would be to go through Pelican Parts to see what you can get, that is where I went. I did see once in a while some items on ebay from like Argentina, but I didn't even bother with them. I only wanted to pull that transmission once, and fix it right the first time. I see auto to stick conversions, but knowing what I know now about the 4 speeds, I would not jump on it without some serious thought. I do like my 4 speed, and I don't want to part with it, but if I had the auto and it was shifting no flaring and a good VCM. I would keep the auto. I really don't know if there is that much difference in the two stop sign to stop sign. I always felt the reason the auto's held up so well was, that they didn't have enough bhp to tear them up. These are only my thoughts after owning both of them.
