Some 2006 CDI E320 Maintenance pics
Got a couple hrs to do my glow plugs and play around under the hood last night of my e320 CDI. I've done glow plugs on a lot of mb and vw diesels. Pretty much all of em. This one is is the easiest one yet. Just a needle nose to pull off the plugs and 10 mm with extension and 1/4 inch ratchet. My only problem was the plastic wire channel is in the way around #4 glowplug so i couldn't get the reamer tool in there.
Anyway, i had #4 glowplug bad and it came out easy. They all did and were all mb beru 5 v. Not sure if they were ever replaced but the number stamp was a little different than on my new ones. I was just gonna replace the one but since i'm gonna run veg i wanted them all fresh. Also i want to see how long a set lasts . Next time one goes out i'll pop in a used one. These are expensive -- 26.95 from the dealer . On the 2006 the bosch 12 V ones don't work. I drained the power steering fluid reservoir and put in fresh. I thought it was really dirtry but the new bottle I got for this car is a brown color too. It says Dexron 2 on it with an mb number on it. I heard some people put chf11 in theirs. Not sure it matters really what you put in but i've heard the wrong stuff can blow the seals on a W210 rack. This car i'm just putting in the factory recommended stuff. I'd like to know what mineral or chemical causes the seals to damage if you use the wrong one. I checked fuel filter. It is the original fuel filter. That is pretty awesome -- 150,000 miles almost on a fuel filter. I'm gonna get another MB original there. If it can last that long, i'll pay the extra 10.00. Everything is so well laid out and easy to get to on this engine. I love the nice flat "tables" they put under there for setting tools and such. There is no way i can sell this car. I'm gonna have to adopt it even if I am in debt for it. Another cool thing is the dealer actually carries parts for these. Handy in a pinch. Here is a tip -- set up a shop account at your dealer. Once they see you enough just say you have a shop and want a cash account and pay the taxes and such. Give them a business card maybe. Anyone can do it, no paperwork and you'll get wholesale pricing - 20% off everything. it really helps. Pelicanparts gives us all the wholesale pricing too but its nice to have local options too. Some pics of under the hood showing the nice layout. Notice no engine driven fan -- just one electric one. That is nice touch. Those fans always get in the way doing belt maintenance. The high pressure fuel pump is bolted right on the front. No more delivery valve leaks. I really love this engine. It looks like I have a leaky egr. Pulling the intake and cleaning and checking that will be next I guess. It looks pretty easy. Is that a big egr cooler -- the flat thing bedind the fuel filter on top of intake pipes with the big rubber hose going into it? Cheers
