Click through the second link I posted and have a look for yourself. There are many examples from different model years. As I already said its possible, the question is how slow are you willing to go? I've squeezed 42mpg out of the 300d a few times but that was all highway driving.

I DID and I do not see anything over 40 average. I am getting out of here, as I have said, I am a realist. All these claims do not happen in real world, either the math is wrong and/or someone is exhaling.

over 40mpg is not possible in a 190d. Even my 2013 VW tdi only averaged 42-45 max in normal driving, and that was with a manual trans, much more efficient engine, and more aerodynamic car.
I've seen as low as 22-24mpg in my 190d 2.2 this winter when driving in the ultra cold/stop and go horrible conditions we've been having. Can't complain as my c240 wagon gets about 16 in those conditions and my 420 would probably get about 10 ![]()

40 fill ups, 17,000, 43mpg average 79 fill ups, 27,000 miles, 40mpg average 5 fill ups, 1,900 miles 41mpg average 26 fill ups, 11,800 miles, 39.9mpg average Ok I guess this one doesn't count? So unless you believe all these people went to a lot of effort over several years to lie about their fuel economy statistics on a web site nobody seems to look at, you have to admit the 190d more than capable of averaging over 40mpg in real world driving, provided it has a manual transmission which all of these do. In real world driving theres about a 30% between manual and auto.

Since I was able to nick 40 mpg in my 240 with the Euro 300, five speed overdrive manual and 307 diff, driving 55 mph, I bet with the right gearing you could get 50 in a 190d running 55 mph.

One of the biggest differences between the W123 OM617's and the W201 with OM60x is the cold weather performance. The 617 takes a century to warm up and produce heat when its 0F outside where the OM60x with aluminum heads make usable heat within a mile or two of driving or 5-10 mins of idling. Cold starting is also way more reliable/easy with the OM60x. No long glows or cranking sessions. Fires right up every time even in these crazy cold temps with a normal 10-15 second glow and just hitting the starter for a second or two.
I suppose with a manual and the right gearing and going 55-60mph 40+mpg is possible, but that's special case. Around here the roads operate at 75-80mph. ![]()

I've done 37mpg in my 190D 2.5 auto and I wasn't really trying to hypermile.
Other advantage of the OM60x- no valve adjustments. Also, I find replacing the belt to be much easier. It's also a quieter engine, when it is running properly. They called it the "whisper diesel" when it debuted. My 240D has probably one of the quietest OM616s in existence while my 190D has an exhaust leak and developed nailing on the #4 injector so it's not quiet as quiet as it should be.

40 mpg is easy to achieve in ((((((modified)))))) 240Ds.
Keep in mind that the new(er) MB diesel technology has achieved an average of 40 mpg @ 140 mph in bone stock CDIs. This was 10-years ago. .
