What kind of experience are folks having with these?

An MB tech told me these vehicles could be programmed using MB Star system. Is there any way to do this with this system?

I am specifically looking to reprogram the BiXenon active lights to behave as they were designed to in Europe.

No...you would need the Star system.

What kind of experience are you having with these? Is it worth getting one of the iCarSoft MB-II scanners for the CDIs?

New to me 2005 e320 cdi

I'm a happy , if a little nervous new owner of a silver/grey cdi. One owner, clean car fax, serviced regularly by the same Mercedes dealer, 98k , clean as a whistle inside and out. I know I stuck my neck out because I didn't have it checked out independently. But the package at 14k was irrestable.
Can you believe 4 days later I hit a deer. Second one in 40 yrs out here in west Marin. I was only goin about 25mph so mostly a broken headlight.
There is a little bit of a rattle coming from between the radiator and the engine. I think the belt tensioner. Doesn't seem to be coming from the engine itself. So my first job is checking for injector leakage then maybe replacing the tensioner.
is there a back up for the sbc system? What happens if it fails while driving? Down shift and emergency break?
My previous car was a 97 e320. Still have it but hopefully not for long.

Do a search on the SBC system and you can read my saga. It failed catastrophically on me, but I love the CDI so much I bought a 2nd one. Just remember to disconnect the SBC connector before doing brake work (pads, rotors).

I do all my own work, and here is the list of what is prone to fail (at least for me):

Thermostat
water pump
in-tank fuel pump (twice)
turbo (for me it failed mechanically...others had issues with turbo electronics)
front left wheel bearing
swirl flap actuator
Driver's door lock mechanism
SBC

Lots of stories of Black Death, but it hasn't happened to me (yet).

Inspection

Took a good look around in and under my new 2005. Clean as a whistle. No oil leaks anywhere. Injectors are clean. Looks like the owner never drove it except when the sun was out and roads dry.

No...it's the SBC "waking up." Perfectly normal.

What is it doing then. Sounds like me getting out of bed in the morning. Maybe I should bring it a cup a coffee?

One more thing, adjusting the headlights. The body shop can't seem to get it right. I want to lower the beam without a bunch of trial and error. Counter clockwise or clockwise?

Found the adjustment nut. Had to turn it a half dozen times before the light moved.

Engine oil/ mileage question

The dealer used Castrol 0-40 synthetic but I need to top it up. I always used Delo which is specific for diesels in my pickups. I haven't checked the Castrol but seems oil for diesels have a different rating from oils for gas engines. What's the recommended oil for this car?

Mileage: on a 500 mile trip last week down to the wild flower bloom in S Ca I got a little over 35/mpg. 3/4quarters of it open hyw at 80mph. I was hoping for closer to 40 which is what the computer registers. Maybe if I slowed down the mpgs would go up? Or is this what I should expect?

Make sure you use diesel rated oil.
