I just bought a 1978 240D. Recently the
reverse went out. Looked up the service records, this is the third time since 1995. Is this common, can anyone give me some info to go to the shop that did the repair in Nov. 97 and May 98. Now I am noticing Clunking in first to second. Would appreciate any information, Thanks Glenn |

It might be your B-2 piston, if your tranny has one. I'm not sure your tranny is of this type. I assume you're checked for proper fluid level, Ect.

Since reverse is the only gear you're missing, I would bet that the reverse band adjusting bolt has backed out(very common). If not that, then the reverse band is broken! The band adjusting bolt is right above the Kick-down solenoid on the right side of transmission. Have a reliable technician perform this adjustment.

If the adjusting bolt and lock-nut are infact loose, have the technician use some "blue" lock-tight on the nut. If it has a broken band you should have a very reputable Mercedes tranmission rebuilder do the work. I do know of one in Atlanta that is very very good, but the only way you can get one of his tranny's is to get an exchange unit.
