Well it looks like I owe Febi an apology, the bearing support looks OK. The vibration is most noticeable accelerating and making a turn as from a red light or stop sign and even more noticeable with passengers. Any ideas

The front balance disc, for those that have it, just needs to be installed according to the markings. (The arrow on the vibration dampner has to point to the hump on one leg of the three legged flange.)
Yes. The Sleeve/Self Locking Cap before installation has a slighlty smaller ID then the Shaft so it is pressed on.
I never noticed that it was not supposed to be reused and I reused mine and I have not cecked it but I have no issues with the Drive Shaft or the Support so I am giessing it is still where it is supposed to be.

What does the epc call this part? Considering how tightly the bearing is held into the bushing and the ease with which the sleeve goes on and off, I figured it's function was as a water slinger to keep water out of the bearing.

Stevo, this sounds like axle wear. The mention of accelerating and making a turn makes me think along those lines.

I had an axle on mine that started to leak and I think the vibration I was feeling wasn't in the driveshaft, as I assumed originally, but from the worn axle. Others, on the forum, have mentioned a clicking noise at stops. However, I never noticed this.

When I jacked the rear of the car to inspect the leaking, I noticed that the worn axle had a different "bend" at the CV joint boot. Then, when I removed the axle, there was considerable play. I didn't have a helper to turn the wheel while watching so I'm not sure how visible it may be on the car.

I got the car jacked up off all fours so I can get a good look at things. The axle boots look fine, no leaking, but the fact that I get more vibration turning would point to axles but theres no clicking. One thing that I did notice is the DS vibration damper is damaged. All the rubber is gone just small bits left on the triangle shaped frame. Can I just pull the fwd DS section and remove it? I can do that with a gimped shoulder

Yes does seem like vibration problem is coming from that worn damper. I had to replace mine on my 85 300sd not so much because the rubber was damaged in it but because the 3 bolt holes that secure it were elongated to the point it would not run in round anymore. The reason it wore like that was my secureing bolts at front of shaft were lose. Im pretty sure you can just take the front off if you loosen at your center bearing holder and let shaft drop down as far as it will go should be able to slip it out of the connection then. I do not know if you can buy the dampener I got a whole used drive shaff front+rear. I think some people have installed w/o that dampener do not know how much it helps. I would be concerned as to what made the dampener go bad are your connections tight?

I've heard they can be just removed but Tom mentioned in another DS thread that it wont not be quite as smooth without the damper. So it would be nice to replace it if possible. The chances of finding another drive shaft for a five speed manual is remote so its remove or replace the device. I'm thinking those bits of rubber cant be evenly distributed so thats gota throw off the balance but more vibration when turning is still a factor that makes me wonder. Regardless the thing to do is remove or replace the damper and see what happens.

All my connections are tight. Your "lose bolt' story reminds of, I once bought a 240D from a neighbor and when I crawled under to check things out, found ONE bolt (and it was lose) holding the fwd flex coupling

I cant seem to find a replacement, I miss Phil.
