Where is the car now? Put a window in it (that's what boy friends are for). Put $2500 on it and take 1st cash offer. You'll be moving and negotiating time will decrease the later it gets.

I would also like a 123 but have promised myself no more projects - unless they follow me home.

Ok... That Lexus is on its last legs. Sell it, and fix the MB.

Really.

The window is very easy to fix, as is the seatbelt. (If you were near me, it'd take about an hour...) pm your info and I can ship you the parts. Our forum has plenty of info on how to do it.

Drive the benz, and sell it if you like once you get there...

I had a high mileage Ford F250. The 1st person worried about the engine. I said "start it. It's better than you might think.". Then he said "the clutch feels strange". I said "that's what I thought. Drive it. Its better than you might think think.". The next question was "will you take any less?". I said "what do you ha e in mind?". He had cash & I took $200 less than my asking price.

Whoever buys yours will need wrenches but mileage shouldn't have an effect.

If the only two major issues that prevent you from driving it to Seattle are the seat belt and the broken window, I'd fix them and go. All cars will need tires eventually. This is s no-brainer for me.

Emotionally you know you want this car. From a logical perspective, this car is worth far more than any econobox. You'd be lucky to get $2k if you fixed up all the niggling problems, but the car can provide far more than that value in the form of another decade of reliable service.

Long trip: highway miles are the easiest on a car. If it was reliable as a daily driver in town, which is really hard on all cars, the trip will be a breeze. I'd only worry about good tires and brakes, have the wheel bearings checked, cooling system checked, fill up the fuel tank and start driving.

Sell the other car to finance this work, easy decision.

If you keep her I would recommend the following,I just recently replaced the injectors on my high mileage 300cd with refurbished injectors, the guy I buy these from cleans up an old set then calibrates the pop pressure with a new set of heat shields for the set, all for $125. It helped tremendously on pickup and smooth running.
On the other hand I can see your delimia about this old car in that the more money you spend towards its road worthiness the etc.etc. $$$$$etc.Since your in Austin I would recommend selling it under the marketing of "Needs New Home " and include the mileage is just a testomony of service ,if the next buyer does the same who knows how long it will keep on the road .

From the looks of the steering wheel that might be actual mileage - and that's nothing to be afraid of as others have said. You can easily get the parts you need at the junkyard and that's also a great way to learn a bit of wrenching - better to make a mistake there instead of on your own car.

I have taken high miles Mercedes on many trips from TX to Colorado and would not hesitate to make the trip in this car if it basically checks out well. Be sure to take spare fuel filters though - they can be hard to find when you're on the road - most parts stores out in BFE don't keep them in stock. And be sure your jack and spare are in good shape.

They are built to maintain and keep driving! Taxi service!

As for the mileage, who would ever turn it forward?

I don't think that car is sellable at all. It took me months to sell a car with only a little over half the mileage and in better shape. If it still runs well id say keep it though, the work it needs should be easy.

1. I think you're better off keeping it.

2. If you disagree with #1, fix the window and the seat belt. Then you should be able to get a grand for it, maybe more. Mileage that high is probably a selling point to some people.

... To the OP (take this with a grain of salt as it is girl speak): My advice would be if you absolutely don't feel confident in the car and your priority is getting the job off to the right start, it might be best to try to find it a home, even if it's at $500 ... for that price I'm sure someone will want it for the novelty of the mileage. If the sentimental value is strong enough and you have interest in tinkering with it, though, keep it. Did you look at prices to ship it there? As others have mentioned, getting the window and heat fixed shouldn't be too hard, especially with help. I would be prepared to do more repairs down the road though, as those won't be the last things to go wrong (lots of support for learning that stuff here). I would fix it to driver status now either way. Then maybe you can assess whether you have confidence to drive it to Seattle or can afford to ship it, or want to try to find someone to buy it.

I have given the OP a honest opinion, sell it for JY value + $100 and be happy, or just for JY value. There are members here who thinks it can fetch $3500. It ain't going to happen.

I also suggested to take it to Washington State to sell it to the environmentalists. There are too many factors to consider. The distance is 2100+ miles. It costs at least $300 in diesel alone plus the risk of breaking down in transit. Plus the costs to make it a DD. Plus all the problems that comes with a 30+ years old car. Plus offloading your Lexus for a good price. Plus you need a spare car when driving an old MBZ diesel.

It is just not worth the hassle unless the car can be shipped to WA for FREE, then we are talking. If I were you, I would say bye bye to the MBZ and TX, and start a new job in WA and be happy. Life is too short to worry about it.

Instead of OBO after the price just put BO. No need to put much more than the few details you described and cast the line in the water,Best Offer by April 30th, done.If you have no shows just call the next one in line.

No shortage of opinions...

Without looking, I would guess that shipping to Seattle would be around $800 - $1k. That being said, Old Merc's are on the rise on the Pac West. Not with the hippies. Young kids are buying them and dressing them up - turning them into low riders and love to turn the turbo diesels in sleepers. They are all over instagram.

The fact that there is little rust will increase market value up there. As a data point, I just bought a clean-ish 240D (150k miles, immaculate interior, and low rust) for just under $2k (after taxes and licensing) - Low rust is hard to find the farther north you travel.

The real question is, can you get more out of it in Seattle than you can in TX? Dunno.

"Shake what your mama gave you." If you want to maximize the resell you need to clean it up a little and make small fixes: Seat Belt, Window, take a magic sponge to the interior... My other suggestion swap out the steering wheel - give the old girl a pretty ring and make her feel special. I would sell the fact that there is hardly any rust.

It won't cost that much to ship it. I don't know where these figures for shipping come from. I am in the middle of no where and thought I would have to trailer my car 150 miles from another more populated city but I found a guy to trailer it here in an inclosed trailer for 500$ and my euro had 2 flats and not running. I posted on one of those shipping sites...I had more bids and still get them!

As people said, this are two options sell it for 500$ or get it shipped...

The issue with this many miles is there is no profit cushion....any wreck will result in an automatic salvage/totally...So why sink in all this money to "fix" the car up....in Cali we would call it a beater...pay 500$ and drive it till it falls apart....At those miles you are dealing with so many things that are naturally approaching the wear limit. Even if the motor is strong.

My euro was found dead in a driveway and 4 new glows got it to start...cost was 300$....my 78 was found died behind a garage coked with WVO and IP in the truck...cost was 375$...both od's show less then 200k...

Both of these cars would have been sent to pnp if I didn't get them. But with those I knew I had a lot more miles they could cover....this one even if free...I just wouldn't want it..
