Cheap R12 leak detector?

They have them for $25 on *bay.
Trying to chase down a slow leak on my car
and was wondering if these work OK.

Thanks,
Jeff

You get what you pay for. What's wrong with UV dye?

Because DYE is TOTALLY USELESS for finding a leak in the Evaporator.... or other high spots or dirty places on the system....

Evacuate,
fill system with nitrogen mixed with FOUR oz of R22 .... this works with a SNIFFER...
and is legal to vent once you have found and fixed the leak...

They are crap.

I got fooled once, then did some homework and got a decent one on eBay for around $80.00. Been working for several years.

Jim,
Thanks for the advice. I will stay away from the cheapie sniffer.
I'll look around here on CL. Now that I think of it I know someone
who's an HVAC guy. He just retired. I'll bet he has one I can borrow.

I am fully charged with R12 now.
I probably loose about 12oz in a year.
Just want to see where it's coming form so I know
what I'm dealing with.

Thanks,
Jeff

Next recharge, inject UV dye with the refrigerant and use a black light to find the leak. The dye is a couple bucks. If you find the leak, great. If not, get the sniffer and test the areas you can't see. No sense dropping almost a hundred bucks on a good sniffer if good old dye will show the leak for 5 bucks.

DYE WILL NOT SHOW A LEAK IN THE EVAPORATOR.... AND MIGHT CAUSE GUMMINESS PROBLEM IN THE SYSTEM... LIKE AT THE TXVALVE.

HOW DO YOU KNOW THE LEAK IS AT THE EVAPORATOR FROM HUNDREDS OF MILES AWAY OVER THE INTERNET?

I am PSYCHIC .....
The idea is that there IS a chance dye will do harm..
and we know it will NOT HELP if the leak is in the evaporator ( which was the problem with my 81 wagon ac ) ..... or if the leak is at high spots in the routing of the lines...or where they are hidden and hard to get to under the turbo for instance...
So why take that chance with so many drawbacks.....when the proper answer covers all the needs without risks ?
