Third brake light?
Has anyone added a third brake light to their car and if so where did you get it?
I would like to add one in the rear window but I am having a hard time finding one that wouldn't reflect all over the interior at night.

When the 3rd light started to become standard equipment, there were lots of add on 3rd brake light kits, haven't seen one in years.
The trick is to find one that the lens is inset and trim the edges of the housing to match the rear glass slope. Next , use foam strips between the housing and glass to block light. The 95 to 2000 C 220 / 230 / 280 ( W202 ) has one that might work, I'm pretty sure it has a deep inset lens. |

Also if its a W126 81' and up 300SD they did make that body style all the way up to 92' you may be able to find a factory one at a junk yard off a later model 560sel or something That would be a direct boltup for an earlier 300SD with a bit of custom wiring of course.

Gen II
I pulled the rear deck from a Gen II W126 and put that in my car.
Those have the 3rd brake light and also the raised speaker grills that can accommodate a speaker upgrade. Jeff

Go look at Sternlighting. Com or something close to that. He has cyclops lights at different angles, plan to get one for mine eventually.

3rd Brake Light
I put a 3rd brake light on my '85 300D-T in 2006. It was adjustable as to angle and fit in the rear window perfectly, held on with strong sticky tape. I ran the power wire down to the rear lights and tied it in to one of the brake light wires. It used LEDs and drew almost no current from the brake light wiring.
All of the records went with the car so I don't remember where it came from or how much it cost. I have a vague memory that it might have been a Hella. It was "electronic" in the sense that you could set it to go on steady, to blink 3 times and then go steady, or to blink continuously, all when you put your foot on the brake. I thought the continuous blink might irritate drivers behind me so I settled for "three blinks and steady." See my post #11 in this thread for pictures. Jeremy

The W201/W124/W126 have the right "look" and fit (different mount heights between the 3 chassis), but are prone to melted lenses due to the 21W bulb being so close.
The later designs are said to be LED and have no melted lenses, but do not have the right "look" to the early W126 generation. Later W126's had them standard, they should be an easy retrofit to the earlier W126.

My 126 third brake light fell apart when I needed to change the bulb. Wife and I went to the local Pull-A-Part and could not find one. They were all gone already. Wife calls to me and says, come look at this one. It was in a Volvo and looked like it may work. Got it and it has worked OK until I can find the correct one. I have not seen a 126 in my area Pull-A-Parts in over a year now.
Please don't flame me for using a Volvo part in a Mercedes. You do what you have to do. PaulM

Yeah pmckechnie. You got lucky.
My wife hates Betsie. "Lets take the Mercedes today" I say. "It's ugly, it stinks, the seat is uncomfortable, it's noisy, it's slow and it's a ghetto car", she replies. "Could you help me bleed the brakes, princess? I just need you to press the brake pedal a few times" I say. "It's ugly, it stinks, the drivers seat is also uncomfortable, and we do not live in a ghetto but that old-ass car belongs in one", she replies. Man, if she'd come with me to a salvage yard, someone should pinch me, because I'd definitely be dreaming!

Yes I have the best wife ever. We have been married for over 50 years, do everything together (well almost everything), we do what I want to do and we do what she wants to do. We are best friends. We both give and take.
Lucky ME, PaulM
