E250 Turbodiesel (W212) ECO Function
Just had my 2014 E250 in for the 40k mile service and had them fix a few minor things. One issue was the ECO function (auto engine shut-off when car stops) became inoperative. It operated normally over the first 35k miles or so.
The issue was corrected with a system reset. Turns out the ECO function is disabled if the fuel tank level gets to some minimum level below which the ECO function shuts off and stays that way. At least this is what the MB dealer told me for the fix under warranty. I have never run the car out of fuel. Have had a few fill-ups on the 21 gallon tank that ran close to 20 gallons. Hope this info helps others solve the mystery. Thanks, Ken

Interesting, you'd think that would self reset.
The Webasto heater in our Touareg shuts off when the fuel drops low enough to turn on the low fuel light. It also logs a fault code. But once the tank is refilled it resumes warming the truck. -J

Hi Ken -- Any other service issues that have come up since you bought this vehicle?
Cheers -- Chris

Thanks for the info/heads-up. I'm anticipating making an E250 purchase, and this is the 1st E250 owner/member here I've read on PP Forum. Is your E250 the 4-Matic?
I'm sure appreciating any feedback in how you like your E250's performing for you too! ![]()

This is my household's 6th Mercedes and my third turbodiesel.
First, I should say that I bought it as a dealer demo with 4,000 miles on it. IF there were initial glitches from the factory they were all sorted before the vehicle went home with me. Since I acquired it in April 2014 I have had no issues other than the two mentioned below at the service just completed on Sept. 11, 2015. Second, the car is rather heavily optioned and includes a few features I would likely not have ordered if I specified the build myself. I was asked above about any other service issues in the first 40k miles. Except for the ECO function reset and a seat cooling fan (optional perforated, actively cooled leather seats) falling on the floor under the driver's seat the car has been flawless. My first two MB turbodiesels were with 5 cylinder (1991) and 6 cylinder engines (1999). The E250 with 4 cylinders (and twin turbos) has by far the most impressive performance and responsiveness. Fuel economy is also the best of the three cars. On trips this summer I had a few tanks of fuel that took me over 800 miles and turned in greater than 40MPG. These numbers were on extended trips. More typical range is 700 miles per tank and 37-38 MPG. If I did not have the 4Matic I am told these numbers would be somewhat higher. At this point, I would definitely make the same choice to buy this car if I had it to do over again. From 1999 to 2014 I drove my 1999 E300 (W210) 348,000 miles since I bought it new. Hope to keep this one longer and get more E250 owners on this forum sharing their experiences as our cars' odometers roll on. Enjoy, Ken

2014 E250 Turbodiesel (W212) first 40k miles
Oh, I did neglect one other issue with the car. With the urea diesel exhaust fluid injection system ("AdBlue") these cars do not have the characteristic aroma that we have all grown to love.

The real fix
Update to my original post #1 above... the ECO function was finally fixed, hopefully permanently, with a software update performed by the MB dealer.

Interesting you mention that. I find my 05 E320 CDI's exhaust smells nothing like my 82 300D's did. (I much prefer the 82.) Does the Bluetec smell like a gasser?

Bluetec exhaust
The Bluetec exhaust has a slight ammonia-like aroma to it.

Quote:
The 87 has the lovely aroma of unfiltered diesel all the time. The 98 smells like the 87 until the cat warms up then it has a slightly sour smell. The 08 (last non ad-blue year for the ML) has the NOx reducing catalyst, it has no discernible smell at all.
