Try a gearbox reset , certainly livens my 97 e300td up.
Sit in car and put ignition on but do not start engine.
Push throttle to the floor so kickdown switch is depressed for just over 5 seconds
Keep foot down and after the 5 seconds turn ignition off but leave key in.
Lift foot off throttle and then remove key and wait for around two minutes before attempting to start car.

I know this works on W210....not sure about W211. In any case, even if you do the reset, the transmission learns your driving patterns and you wind up at the same place.
