wow, it's unusual for a car tire to separate tread... how old was the tire? was it a retread? any chance it was driven around with low tire pressure? excess sidewall flex from low tire pressure could have built up enough heat to overload the rubber, and let it go...

Tell me about it! I will post a pic of the tire in a moment...I gotta see if I have something around here to use as a spare.....I am not sure if it was or how old they were...When I went on my michigian trip, I had a member who seen me running two rims n two bundts on the euro and donated me four extra tires he had....so I don't know the history of them...I was thinking I hit something on the center lines....then we heard the antenna go all wonky....tapping the breaks was causing us to slide...so I went onto the shoulder expecting a blow out.....instead we notice the tread missing....and all over the road.....Was very interesting! We did go fourth on the trip, off roading down ATV trails....and never lost the other one....

I have been playing around with my tire pressures because I have to hall around 75 to 100 pounds of stuff in the trunk ever since my work vehicle died for the final time.

The tires are a certain size at a certain psi.... the temperature makes no difference..... he should have put the tire at whatever psi he wanted to set the front end at.... and set the alignment...... then told the owners they needed to set the tire psi the next morning when the tires were cold...

He had no way except guessing as to the psi the tire was going to be the next morning when it was cold....

hopefully most of the settings he did were on cars which had been in the shop long enough to get front end parts replaced... thus cold enough to be accurately set that day and it be good when the tire cooled...
' he died stupidly' .... don't leave us hanging on which stupid means he fell victim to....
the voodoo he used was to measure the tire temps across the tread and set the alignment to equalize this temp rise on the tread itself... nothing to do with overall tire pressure.

the overall pressure was adjusted based on the vehicle load info... but he could not do it, as the temp of the tires was raised from the driving. he simply set the cold pressure at 30 front, and 25 rear... his reasoning on this was the motor is heavier than the trunk... normally. yes, he STRONGLY recommended to the owners of the vehicles to set temps when the tires were cold. he always recommended they follow vehicle specs for pressure.

he died working on his personal car in his driveway without jackstands, and the jack collapsed and the car crushed him... so, yeah... stupid.

I do that a lot... my SPRINGS are massively overloaded... tire wear on the rear tires is always smooth and even. even though they are at high load... with 36 ish psi on the tires.

the fronts always get odd wear patterns no matter how I set the pressure, or how I align the front end... I drive oddly, and the heavy loads in the rear throw off the alignment I guess...

Only for the tire size and type originally installed on the car. ( RE PSI to weight carrying ability , lateral stiffness. )

I usually don't stray that far from original sizing either.

Sorry for the delay....Went outside and noticed oil under the 78...EEEKKKK....Guess the off roading I was doing, made the oil pan land on a rock....put a hole in it! Luckily it was on the other side of the oil pump so no damage to that but the dent was like 3in deep...

Looks pretty old. You do know that Firestones were implicated in the Explorer mess a few years back...what model is that tire? Maybe it's not too late to join the class action.

If you will look in the chassis manual on tire wear.... you will find that the wear pattern (pictures ) you are used to on American cars... is not what they consider normal on the MB....
So you may have it as good as it gets while worrying that it is not normal...

What is the manufacture date on the sidewall of the tire? If that thing is still holding pressure deflate it immediately.

Things like this are exactly why I am so critical and obsessive about tires. They are the ONLY link between your car and the road, and what good is a car that has no traction? After hydroplaning briefly in a car once, I have been obsessed with maintaining my tires, keeping the best traction I can possibly have, and inspecting them regularly to be aware of any irregularities. You would not believe the outright SCARY tires situations customers would bring to me. Dry rot, bald tires, tires down to the steel belts, tires with huge bubbles in the side, tires with uneven bald patches due to worn shocks, chunks missing from the sidewall, push-in patches right on the edge of the sidewall, etc. It made me not want to drive home at night knowing they were right behind me going 45 mph. I absolutely will not go on the highway without inspecting all of the tires, their pressures, and all of my fluids. I don't care how late I run, I won't go without doing it.

Okay these tires are Firestone FR480.....manufactured in 2008....Reading alot about others who experienced tread separation....seeing if there was a recall....anyone can help...would be great...now I am afraid of the others...as its not an age issue but manufacturing defect...lord....
