'84 300TD transmission woes

While driving, I saw a puff of smoke and car stopped. It would not move forward or reverse. Any ideas?

Have you checked the level of the trans fluid and the shift linkage? W123 cars are known for worn shift linkage bushings which result into the trans not shifting into reverse or drive properly.

The puff of smoke came from the tail pipe ? Was there sudden deceleration or the car coasted to a stop ?
Did the engine stop at the time the car stopped ?
