My 84 300SD has near 350,000 miles and you would be hard pressed to get it to smoke. Because these engines will run and run, rarely is the proper maintenance done. Frankly, most of the added on systems have a next-to-nothing effect on cleaning up emissions and are only there to provide job security to government entities.

You hit the nail on the head Sam.



One thing about the Trap installed is, the exhaust comes out of the Manifold, then through the Trap, then through the Turbo.
There is a drop in heat and some loss in power.

Installing the "test" pipe you still have the exhaust routed the same way.
The exhaust flow would speed up not having the restrictions of the trap.

The best thing to do on the 85, is change it over like an 83 is. and also install a set of 78/79 300SD manifolds.

there were three HP ratings on the OM616...

1) Not much power
2) Even less power
3) Not nearly enough power!! 240D w/auto

Anyone that thinks a 240D is slow drives too fast.

If you care a lot about emissions, you probably shouldn't be driving a car from the 80's.
