The 90 and up Ford Escort is a rebadged Mazda. It could have come with a Mazda or Ford motor.

Mazda makes engines for forklifts so I'd expect the Escort diesel to have come in one of those. Ford has an industrial engine division but , near as I can tell, never a US design / built small diesel in that era.
