86 300SDL with 5 speed

My friend just finish a conversion in a 86 300SDL auto to 5 speed manual 717430 from an 88 300E I think he got the 2.65 rear differential and he is not happy the way it drives with the taller differential I told him to swap it for a 3.07 ratio but he wants to hear more opinions

How about the stock 2.88? Very interested in following this thread, this is what I want to do with my 300SD. He might have a little trouble with the 3.07 since it's an earlier-style diff.

Thumbs up

Well if the trans has a 0.81:1 overdrive like I think, a 3.46:1 from a 300SE/L would give you basically the same as stock gearing in overdrive (2.88:1).

3.07 is what the guy who did my manual transmission swap into the 190D turbo from the 2.6 gear it had originally. Until I adjusted the Alda 3/4 turns, it was a real dog off boost, now the power-band is quite linear up to the governor(one turn on the full load as well)
