Post OM602 Help remove camshaft timing gear

Hello All,

I am new to this forum.
There is a lot of knowledge and great information here!

I am in the process of changing the hydraulic lifters.
I need to remove the camshaft timing gear.
It is an odd shape/profile cast, and hard to get to with the pullers that I have.

I am tempted to remove the cam with the sprocket attached, but worry that a lifter may rotate the entire assembly and cause unnecessary grief.

There are no specific tools/process described in the manual for this.

I hope someone can chime in on how to make this possible.

Alex.

loosen bolt on camshaft sprocket (do not remove)

remove tension from the chain

remove sprocket and chain

gently, methodically remove camshaft and holders.

---there is no need for any other tools after the sprocket bolt is removed. It just slides off. If it is stubborn, try a few gentle taps on it.

Welcome to the forum! Don't forget to zip tie the chain to the sprockets I think I used about 6 zip ties before you start.

Thumbs up

Thank you all for the quick replies!

jt20:
I'll tap the sprocket to persuade it accordingly. (I am intimately familiar with precision fits)

dieselbenz1:
I have used a single steel tie wrap. I believe it is plenty and is low risk alternative. I don't want to loose stuff in to the chain cover/guide area when cutting the ties(watching for SS shavings with mine as i loosen/tighten it).

I am also debating to do head gasket change...since it's somewhat apart now.

My oil pressure will fluctuate when on idle some of the time between 2 and 2.5 mark. (Maybe it's normal?)
Coolant does not disappear.
It will drip 3-4 drops of engine oil when parked ( looks like from oil filter area )
I know it needs injector nozzles (on order)
It also needs injector shields replaced (will be done with nozzles and pop tested), because leaking from under pre chamber threads(they are the old style without the slotted threaded nut and require a very special tool).

I basically need the car to last a Canadian summer. I am rebuilding the MK2 1.6TD from the ground up (my winter buddy)

190D will be my summer car(I love the smooth ride!).
I plan to tear in to it next summer in the same fashion as the Golf.

looking forward to your opinions/advice!
