Transmission Filter Change

I'm changing the transmission filter on my 77 240D. Now, I could be (and probably am) exhibiting some variety of cranial thickness, but I can't seem to find any specs on the size of the sockets/allen sockets that I need. Also, the size of socket i need to turn the motor to bring the torque converter drain around seems to elude me.

Anyone know those sizes?

Thanks, All.

Off the top of my head.... I think the crank nut is 27 mm ... but I reserve the right to withdraw my guess due to old age. I am sure this is somewhere in the archives...

Ok.. from a thread Vstech said '' 27mm 12 point deep FULL DEPTH socket works, 1-1/16 is close enough. "

Post Slushbox Service

Don't forget the 5MM Allen to drain the torque converter .

Does anyone know the proper amount of liters/quarts to buy for this job ? .

I need to do all three of mine , W123's .

TIA ,

crank is a 27mm, p/s pulley bolt is a 22mm (if you decide to turn it that way), trans pan and t/c drain plugs are 5mm allen, pretty sure trans pan bolts are 13mm hex and also pretty sure it takes about 7 quarts of atf

For my older Benz I really like Titan Fuchs ATF. Newer Benz get the factory 134FE (blue) .

OK, the transmission is draining as we speak.

27mm for the crank bolt and 5mm for the TC drain are right on the money. However, the drain for the pan is a sort of banjo looking bolt. It's 13mm.

In a few minutes, the pan and filter come down.

Its a good idea to clean the pan very well ,I usually scrub it like Im going to paint it .Sometimes its also helpful to add some gasket seal in key areas on the trans gasket ,not to seal but to hold the gasket in place as you put it back on .Be carefull not to over crank the trannie bolts also ,the pan can become wrapped if over tighten.I like to do mine once a yr,right before the heat of the summer.

Post Routine Tranny Service

Thanx , I think this is a series 722. tanny , I'll look for that ATF .

ALWAYS clean the pan and the inside of the tranny HOSPITAL CLEAN using LINT FREE rags as *one* tiny bit of lint can cause no end of headaches .

Ten 4 on the pan cleaning. I usually give mine a final wipe down with acetone and lint free rag (old lens cleaning cloth). The service manual on all years highlights the need for basically sanitary conditions when servicing.
