NAPA or genuine Bosch alternator?

The 1984 300D's alternator is shot; two options are either going with a NAPA brand alternator or a genuine Bosch. Also, I'm thinking of upgrading to 65 amp. NAPA has always made great parts but I've always had great luck using genuine Bosch parts on this car.

If that Bosch is going to come from an online retailer ,I would recommend the napa.

easier to deal with future issues, stores in every US town, much faster turn around.

See what their warranty is.

I have witnessed more than one failed Bosch alt right out of the box. That doesn't mean I think the NAPA is superior, they're both likely to fail... one is just easier to deal with.

Where are the Bosch remans from in this day in age?

Depending on what is wrong with it, call your local electrical shop. New bearings, new voltage regulator, and a test is about all most will receive anyway.

I agree with local reman, I go with Autozone units after I have them bench tested. Plenty of them around me and have not had any issues.

OR

Pull the 80A off and toss it on your 300D, I think it will need a reclock of the cases to fit easy and install an AL129X 115A on your 560SEL.

For what it's worth, the remanufactured 90a Bosch alternator that came in my 97 e300 had big fat "made in mexico" sticker. It failed 4 years after the previous owner installed it.
Isn't there a Saab 115a alternator out there that would fit your car? NAPA sells the same parts that most online retailers are peddling these days. Not saying they're good or bad but don't limit yourself to a single supplier.

In January 2015 I installed a 115 amp AL129X alternator in my 78 300SD.

It was re-manufactured by Bosch, supplied by my independent mechanic and has been trouble-free since the install.

Hit Man mentioned the AL-129-X , it is the 115 amp one used on the SAAB.
I installed one on our 85 300D a few years back.
Is slightly larger in size, but will fit right in.

I did have to swap the Serpentine pulley for the double belt pulley.
Also in creased some of the wire sizes.

Picked it up from my favorite auto parts store...PNP.
I was a Bosch rebuild.

I would put a 115A on the 560 before the D. The 560 has far more electrical nonsense going on (CIS unit, heated seats, power rear seat, etc) than the simple Diesel.

+25A is still a nice jump over the 55A stocker.

In an ideal world, upgrade both.

I agree.

Get it locally and have them test it before you leave the building. That way you don't waste any time instally a defective rebuilt one.

Also My Alternator had a tag on it rebuilt by Bosch North America and I was taking it apart to change what turned out to be a made in China Bearing.

Also having it tested before you install tells you it worked and if it does not work on your Vehicle there is a good chance that you have a non-alternator issue.
